Yeah, for all the time that I've spent playing, listening, collecting, creating over the years...I may have finally reached a stage in life where I'm not really "dying to listen". Easily go days (not deliberately, but...), probably not weeks if only because I'll find myself having to perform, to learn something, or being intrigued by a YouTube clip, or putting the car radio on.
I never really believed it could ever hit "busman's holiday" for me, but...frequently it does. Also...if I'm in any sort of state (annoyed, depressed, etc.), my feeling is that I don't want to bring music into it.
I DON'T listen passively, which also affects my relationship with it. I miss being in school and loading up a 6 CD changer and working through the night, but..I now struggle to imagine how I ever managed such a thing.
I made a sort of "laugh to keep from crying" joke with a friend/bandmate recently (we're both neurotic old men) about how the range of things I now refer to as "chaotic" has increased dramatically. Something about music and people talking going simultaneously makes me absolutely mental - I'm keen to eliminate one of the noises, and often it's the talking. If that's not practical, then...it had better be the music.

I can go as long as I need to but I'm always glad to get it back. I try to be a pretty easy to get along with guy. when you're pretty easy to get along with you can go for a long time without doing the things you'd do if left to your own devices.
Usually books get put down and movies get paused before they are finished. Tunes go into the background along with everything else. the Good Lord has taken it on himself to see that I not be able to listen to music while driving which is really the only time I have for it.
I will, I will, rock me.
Having said all that. I love making playlists. I've got all this Chess stuff and Hajime Tachibana I used to binge on in the 80's. as soon as I've got a couple of hours to myself - that'll be something to look forward to.

I miss being in school and loading up a 6 CD changer and working through the night, but..I now struggle to imagine how I ever managed such a thing. Interesting - I'm the opposite. From when I was very young, well into adulthood, it was impossible for me to listen passively. If there was music audible from anywhere in the vicinity, even if it was music I hated, there was a part of my brain that had to pay attention to it - and yes, that did make social situations trying at times. Nowadays a lot of the music I hear does kinda "go in one ear and out the other" - maybe not entirely, but to a much greater extent than I once would have been able to imagine. When asked the "what one record would you have with you on a desert island?" question, my answer for years has been "let me just have an instrument instead." But I suspect that I'd be fine with no music at all. Really, music is wherever you find it anyway - ocean waves can be as musical as anything else.

I'd say I very rarely go more than a day or two without actively listening to music, but then I don't know how important the music is, and how important the fact that it's just me shutting everyone else out. The time without distraction is really important to me. But I don't do headphones while out and about, I think you should interact with your surroundings. Out walking the dog in the middle of nowhere, why would you miss our on that rare chance to hear the sound of wilderness or countryside.

For some time I used to meet twice a year with a couple of friends in a remote environment with CD mixes prepared for the occasion, volume at 11 and plenty of beer. Unfortunately circumstances forced us to give up that activity few years ago.
Other than that, I don't remember the last time that I sat down and listened to a whole album without doing anything else. Probably decades ago. Then, there are some activities that I find compatible with paying attention to music, ironing, cooking and the like. Also driving, and the car is my main place to enjoy music. I don't like earbuds, they tend to hurt my ears, so I get no pleasure from walking around and playing music.

Speaking of that, how's the pooch doing, DF? "General Blethering" has been the thread for dog news, but he's doing a lot better, thanks. Spent his first night back home in one of those cone things, barely slept (and therefore neither did I), but he's eating and looking much more like himself again.
