I slide my tray along the Pink Floyd Salad Bar and take generous scoops from each period. I did cut my teeth on "saucerful.." so there's a bit of bias but I really do heartily enjoy all that stuff especially if I've been away for a while. I don't really like "the wall" very much but there's still stuff on there I like. you can stick anything from "final cut" onwards in your pipe and smoke it.

Yep, same here, PF is indeed one of the biggest "salad bar" artists for me; i really like bits of every LP they released from the 60s to the 80s. But if i want a full and proper single meal, it's only the Syd era that interests me now.

I rate Piper, Meddle, DSOTM, and Animals as majorly special evergreen records. There's bits on The Wall and WYWH that I rate pretty highly ("Shine On..." is touched by the hand of god, for sure).
Obviously, nothing sparkles like the Syd era, but...it's rather incredible that the caterpillar of a rudderless Floyd eventually became quite a butterfly.
It's a testament to the era that they were allowed to sort of grope and fumble in the dark for as long as they did between Piper and Meddle/DSOTM. There's things about all of the in between records/soundtracks/projects that I like (though Ummagumma is hard work), but - for me, that period is wildly inconsistent and uneven (something as pivotal as "Careful With That Axe Eugene" coming on the flip side of...well, something as dinky as "Point Me At the Sky" makes my point for me). I probably enjoy outtakes like "Embryo" and "Biding My Time" more than I like a lot of what they chose to release in real time.
Having worked my way randomly backwards through their catalog as a teenager (they were a favorite band at the time), they really were like a "bizarro Beatles" (another band whose story/records came to me in no logical sequence) and so much of what they'd put their hand to seemed like "What!??!" (I bought Piper and Atom Heart Mother sight unseen during the same summer, at a time when I mostly knew their three biggest sellers [and The Final Cut]).
The Gilmour led era is fucking dismal.
