I'm probably going to give it a go. It's a big thing right now. This shows how stupid I am sometimes - initially I thought it was a reality show, and they'd gone so far with that genre that they were literally killing off participants hahahahahahahhaha!

The episode where they played marbles was particularly good and some of the best tv I have seen. Yes! Some of the most emotionally-charged TV i've seen in a very long time, especially the moments between the 2 young female characters. Yeah, that was the highlight of a truly fantastic episode of television.

I watched the first one. the sets in the trailer just knocked my eyes out. All the people who are hating it on Facebook worked as a reverse barometer and my curiosity got the better of me. I gave the first episode a go.
I'm a pretty squeamish character so the violence, while expected, was still a little jarring. I'll make no commitment to 9 goddam hours of television but I thought it was very well done.

what I like about this first episode is how close to home it is. there's a lot of people who feel backed into a corner who would welcome a slim chance to solve their money problems.
I found the set up extremely well thought out. Our main guy seems like a complete fuck up in those first scenes then in the next few you get a sense of how he's basically decent underneath. desperation ain't pretty. while they are desperate, the participants really have NO idea what they are getting themselves into.
the sets that impressed me were certainly worth my time. I just love ape-shit production design like this. lime green and lavender Dr. Seuss looking shit that feels SO out of whack that you know something bad is just around the corner.
It might be derivative and I doubt I'll make it through the whole shebang but the characters are growing on me a little at a time. for me, this is usually a good thing in the long haul.

I watched the last episode a couple of days ago. I'd say it's a really unbalanced series. The marbles episode is superb, it stands out as some of the greatest writing for a TV show in ages. But then it kind of all proves fairly meaningless and futile by the end. The time they invested in some of the characters (the North Korean girl especially) only to gave nowhere to go with them, it feels cheap, gimmicky. Fun but empty fun.

I've watched the first three and I'm into it. I like that it's easy to follow, no Bond-like bullshit plot complexities. And the violence isn't graphic at all - nothing's seen in close-up and (so far) it's all been exactly the same 'elimination' method.
The main character can't act for toffee.

Are you watching it via the subtitles?

Yeah, I had to change it from dubbed to English subtitles with original Korean soundtrack.

I don't think the main character is too bad. A lot of people are calling out the VIPs (you haven't got to them yet) as being the worst part of the show, but for my money the worst scene was in the betting shop. It looked like some kind of school play depiction of gamblers watching a race, totally cringeworthy.

I was disappointed. It started off interesting but got worse as it went along. I liked some of the characters though - I’m glad they had numbers as I’m terrible at remembering Korean names. The Elon Musk-type voyeurs in their gilded piggy masks were a bit daft!

The VIPs part was one of the least successful for me, as the non-Korean actors' performances felt very stilted and 2D, but it didn't affect my overall enjoyment of the show.

I like the lead. I think he's got a nice open faced quality.

The VIPs part was one of the least successful for me, as the non-Korean actors' performances felt very stilted and 2D Appalling! The main character looked like Brando in comparison! The bridge game was rivetting, however. I like the evil dude even tho' he's kind of a stereotype, and I'm sure I've seen him in something before. His 'love companion' is a real pain in the arse, mind. The marbles episode that some of you have praised....yeah, it was good to get some back stories (and the small Korean lass who ended up being, erm, 'taken out' was especially good - a really sweet, human scene) but didn't you think it was a major flaw that they were all just handed a bag of marbles and just told to play? play WHAT, exactly? Seeing as how every other game had clear instructions that had to be followed closely, why so vague here? it didn't make a bit of sense. I've two more to go and I'm really enjoying it, despite everything. And as someone who's a bit squeamish about such things, I STILL don't think it's particularly violent. Brutal and mindless in concept, yes. But nothing to turn the stomach, really. Most modern horror movies feature far worse.
