a mad hybrid of two of my favourite albums: bee gees 1st and piper at the gates of dawn.
camp as hell. limp-wristed-lisping heaven.
the song titles alone are magnificent:
mr small, the watch repairer man the murder of lewis tollani
bookended by the magnificent ‘the sky children’.
my mind explodes with joy when i hear ‘(further reflections) in the room of percussion.
of course, ‘flight from ashiya’ is a stone-cold psych classic.
a lesson perhaps?

a mad hybrid of ... bee gees 1st and piper at the gates of dawn. Spot on! Faintly Blowing is more consistent, but the best parts of this are pretty much as magical as the genre gets (which is saying a lot). I've been convinced since first hearing it that "The Sky Children" was inspired by Donovan's "Legend Of A Girl Child Linda" (NOT a criticism - if anything I love it more). I wonder if Daltrey or Pumer ever said as much?

i was introduced to this album by an old friend, 'hippie' pete. i met him at gossips nightclub in soho at clive the doctor's clinic night in 1981. a couple of weeks later i saw him riding around cheshunt (a small town in herts where i grew up) on a woman's bike wearing an afghan coat. it turns out he lived a 10-minute walk away from me! here is a photo of him at *gossips, he is the guy kneeling on the left: we became firm friends. the balding guy standing up next to him, ian, was also from cheshunt and was the bass player in legendary cheshunt punk band 'revenge' and pete's best friend. they formed a band together completely influenced by kaleidoscope called the tangerine experience and recorded a track for one of dan treacy's comps on whaam records called 'only the sky children': ol' ma skope used to call pete and ian 'a couple of queers' and likened them to the villains in 'diamonds are forever'. clive the doctor, he's in the crate in the photo, was also a big influence. he gave me a couple of mix tapes with bands like the seeds and elevators before i'd heard nuggets. the girl giving the doc a banana used to work in sweet charity in kensington market. 8 years later i would join her band who also happened to be on dan treacy's label. in fact, the singer was his girlfriend. and finally, getting back to kaleidoscope, i took the last part of my handle from them when i started to post on bcb * looking again at the photo, it doesn't look like gossips. i think it was taken at the groovy cellar in piccadilly.

the predictable lack of response to these threads is one of the reasons why i didn't register. This might help I never heard of the album, let alone familiar with it. I have very little listening time, but I'll try to get around to it in the next week, although I also have to listen to the album I'm up to do on Friday. It's all go

My UK Fontana original vinyl are amongst my most prized and valuable in my archives. Such great albums, effortlessly melodic and exuberant and melancholic at the same time, possibly the birth ground of whole British subgenre of the 80s.

the predictable lack of response to these threads is one of the reasons why i didn't register. And you post this thread on the same day that another poster has posted his hard-worked contribution to this exercise, after duly waiting in line. Nice. Very nice.
...
I played it this morning thinking it was an album called Kaleidoscope by the band Tangerine Dream. Obviously I was rather puzzled until I found out. A fine album anyway, I'll play it again with my head in place.

i don't know why you're getting so upset, oz. the whole project was doomed to fail due to missed deadlines. we should just be able to post up our favourite albums without any time restrictions put in place.
