One of the things I find most interesting about reading profiles on new artists with albums coming out is if the praise lives up to the music. Read this NY Times article which got a whole back page of the arts section and then listen to the music and see if it lives up to the hype. For me, there were some obvious clues about this young woman's upbringing. www.nytimes.com/2021/10/14/arts/music/remi-wolf-juno.html

But seriously... I really enjoyed those videos. But though the songs are clearly clever (at least some of the time) and she has a good voice, I'm not sure I could put up with a whole album of this without the visuals.
I guess it's really past time for me to admit that I don't really "get" pop music any more.

When the article mentioned she grew up in Palo Alto and was a skier, I immediately knew her family was rich as fuck. The median price of a house in Palo Alto is $3.6 million and the average income is $158,000. Turns our her parents are Lenny Waronker and Kate McGarrigle. I had no idea they lived in Palo Alto.

Agree on the mixed ethnicity. Two sites said that and listed her brother and sister as Rufus and Lucy Wainwright. I can't speak to the accuracy, however. They were wiki sites which are dubious at best.

I do think that some young artists are taking pop music in interesting directions - they're using the full pallete of styles at their disposal. Hip-hop, emo, punk, prog, jazz, R&B, Norteno, the whole shmear - there are more established artists like Thundercat who are doing the same sort of thing on a more polished degree to critical acclaim.

Other musical alumni of Palo Alto High are The Donnas.

All these newer artist all feel really self-absorbed, like Phoebe Bridger, mxmtoon, Willow Smith, Remi Wolf - analyzing their feelings to the point of paralysis. More than say near-teenage artists in the '60s like the Beatles and the Stones. They seem emotionally retarded in some ways.

The lamest generation ever I think they're very savvy in lots of different way, but they're pretty sensitive to criticism, even constructive criticism, and think the world's done them dirty.
