Why buy it if you don't like them? Didn't know I didn't like them till I heard them. Plenty of people whose opinion I took notice of were talking about them, so I picked it up when I was out and about, presumably quite cheaply.

To be fair I used to sometimes buy stuff I'd heard about or things that just looked interesting. That was in the days when I was idealistic about music!

I still do, regularly. Might just be a name I recognise, or a particular record label, or if the cover just looks nice. Because I only get out to do some record shopping once every few weeks, if I haven't found enough stuff I actually want, I tend to top up with the cheap stuff that looks interesting.

Lol. Do you have a quota? I don't have a specific number, but I don't want to go through the hassle of a train journey to Manchester just to spend twenty or thirty quid. So I'll buy a few cheapo albums that look vaguely interesting. I wouldn't have thought that was unusual in music nerd circles.

Virtually everything I bought from the mid-1970s on I hadn't heard. I bought them to hear them.

I do find that's a risky strategy with new or newish music. You're on safer ground doing that if you're buying something from the 60s,70s or 80s. I guess I was a bit influenced by critical praise for stuff, but I stopped paying attention to that around 2003/4 because things started to get wildly overpraised and didn't justify the hype.

There’s no reason to buy anything unheard anymore. You can hear it on YouTube or stream it and not waste your money. I wish I had those options when I was younger.

You'd have to be aware of it in the first place, to YouTube it or stream it. Most of the time, I'm buying pretty obscure stuff, based on vague criteria. Plus, I generally don't believe you give something the same attention when you haven't actually invested cash in it. YouTube, you'll listen once and reject. Physical copy, you'll return to more than once.

Let's get this back on track.
Remember the 90s, when every once-hip artist thought all they needed to do to sound fresh was to put a rhythm box behind some sighing or rapping? (yes that includes Bowie!)

This piece of shit keeps popping up - usually when I'm grocery shopping (along with that fucking horrid Gaga abortion about a hundred million reasons to walk away). I'm beginning to think I should switch supermarkets...

My dad absolutely loves that Blink-182 song, he bought the CD single and all (he was like 44 when the song came out). For me the Mark Hoppus bits are fine enough, but the Tom DeLonge bits hit the ear the same way a bowling ball would if dropped from a 5th floor balcony.

(yes that includes Bowie!) It did give us one of the best misheard lyrics ever though...."bill oddie, bill oddie, put your hands all over my body!"
