... the bewilderingly overrated (not a word I use much) "Dead Flowers" ... Them's fighting words!!! I come in peace, but Charlie and I are assuredly reading from the same hymnal here.

... the bewilderingly overrated (not a word I use much) "Dead Flowers" ... Them's fighting words!!! Yeah, yeah, I know. There are a few great lines scattered about, but as put-downs go, this one is pretty labored - it sounds cleverer than it really is. I actually like it okay as a Sticky Fingers album track - Jagger puts it across as well as it can be put across, and the band sounds fine - but any time I hear anybody else sing it (which is surprisingly often), or even hear the Stones track in another context, I wince.

Guilty as charged. The pub band I was in used to cover it.

I can't help you with your question, and I doubt anyone else can either, so let's broaden this out and talk about the album. I admittedly have moved away from The Stones quite a lot in the last 15 years, but even before then, when I was more of a fan, I couldn't see why this was so acclaimed. It's meant to be this return to the "authentic" Stones, which means the album is stuffed full of rather forgettable blues, but like many of their albums it is extremely patchy.... I don't see it so much as a return to 'authentic' Stones, but as a weird psychedelic hangover album. There are a couple dry, 'rootsy' things ('No Expecations' mainly, while 'Factory Girl' and 'Dear Doctor' are too much pastiche), but there's still a lot of sounds from the previous album. 'Street Fighting Man' and its droning sitars sounds like it's coming off a radio in 1967 and you say 'What is this music??'' to yourself, that Mellotron note dropping in at the peak of 'Jig Saw Puzzle', Moroccan percussion on 'Sympathy', congas on 'Stray Cat Blues', low-fidelity 'Parachute Woman' not exactly true-to-life and 'honest' ... the mix of blues and frazzled psych with a dark Performance-ish undercurrent, it feels like they finally made the Brian Jones album, even if he was barely present. Watching the 'Sympathy' footage shot by Godard, it's clear they are still in Moroccan mode.

They seem much more loved in America generally I think. I love the enthusiasm people have for the album, but I don't think I'll ever feel it myself other than for the tracks I've mentioned.

The promo where they're wearing all the weird make up is even better though.
It's funny how whenever I hear JJF, I invariably get into it. It doesn't seem to lose its lustre in the way so many classics do. A lot of that is down to the groove Charlie lays down, it hooks you in straight away and you can't help bobbing along to it.

Brand spanking new HD upgrade of a spellbinding performance of one of their finest singles: Thats great! I've never seen it before. A few thoughts.. - JJF is fine but it doesn't really lift off, it starts at 90mph and stays there. Its the prototype to SFM and SFtD which perfects the idea. - Is it live? It sounds live and not the official recording, but there's parts where it doesn't quite sync - So great to hear Mick not having to project out to row ZZ. You barely recognize this man. Seeing them live pre-stadium would have been amazing. - Brian Jones on blue Telecaster - Too many sweaty close-ups wtf - Did Michael Lindsay Hogg shoot every video back then!? - Its crazy that ABCKO is still a thing after all these years, it hasn't been incorporated into Sony or Disney. Respect
