Got back last night after a great week. I really ate far too much THO
It's tricky to choose what to see at these festivals, because of course the majority of what's on show is untested, so you take a bit of a risk. And the older films, you've probably seen already anyway.
Anyway....after Spaceman I saw Black Tea, which I really enjoyed, but which went on a bit
The star of this thing is something special for sure. She's beautiful.
I saw a handful of indies - Last Swim, The Outrun, Matt and Mara and Janet Planet. The first of those was the best, the last two weren't really worth bothering with. I mean, sometimes the protagonists aren't leading particularly interesting lives, you know?
But the original Godzilla from 1954 was magnificent! I had no idea what to expect, didn't know it would pack such a punch. Of course the audience tittered at the special effects but I thought it was pretty well done for a seventy-year-old film (the 4K restoration helped a bit). It didn't shy away from making political points - pretty explicitly, at some points - and the human/romance aspect was really well handled.
And finally, on Sunday night I saw this
I'll always make an effort to see Kristen Stewart in anything. She consistently chooses interesting projects. This started off really well, and it was nice to see some real hard-hitting DRAMA after the drippy low-key movies I'd seen over the previous two days. Ed Harris was good too. But it got really silly and the audience (again, tittering over everything) spoiled it. I'd still recommend it, I think.
So, all in all, if you're interested, you should maybe see Spaceman, Last Swim, Black Tea and Love Lies Bleeding. But out of all the ten films I saw, I'd say After Hours was the best. Next year I think I'll go for the older movies more.

Teutonic twittering is a massive problem in Germany. They feel as a nation that they can only laugh in the dark.
