The Birthday Party were definitely exciting when they emerged.

1983
Not the greatest year. I was struggling to know what to pick but then I remembered this, which is a personal favourite and a great pop song full of joy, exuberance and a kind of innocence we seem to have lost. To think it's now 40 years old. Christ.

Relieved that Doug has picked one of my options, I'll go for
1983
U2 - New Year's Day
One of the few U2 hits that has not been eroded by familiarity, it still sounds exciting to these old ears of mine.

I'm going to plough on with 1984, if only because the canon series is the only thing getting people posting (and even then numbers are dwindling). This is probably the first year where I don't feel bombarded by choice, we're starting to go into the lean years of the mid eighties. There is one huge number from this year I'd like to see in the canon, but I'm going to risk someone else picking it.. which will probably mean it won't get picked at all! Instead I've decided to go for a songwriter who I think has been underrepresented so far, and this is one of his tenderest, most sensitive moments. A beautifully beguiling melody and with a melancholy which is oddly warm and comforting.

This is prime time for me, G, so I will be contributing a bit more fora a decade or two!
The Cult 'Spiritwalker'
The evolution of Ian Astbury's journey. I'd bought the SDC stuff when it came out and was watching to see what would happen next. The 'Dreamtime' album was great, and it came with a live album in the first run. My sister bought me the album for my birthday-and tried to surreptitiously keep the live record. I'm glad I spotted her naughtiness and wrenched the live album for her hands-it's brilliant
Here's a track from that
God's Zoo

Just to confirm Fonz, you're picking 'Spiritwalker' right?
p.s. I bought that EP. There was a bluesy track on there called 'Bonebag' I really liked.

I remember seeing a BBC half hour edit of that Lyceum Gig and was hooked. I was disappointed when they went all 'rawk', although I can enjoy some of that stuff now.
I still occasionally give stuff like 'Bad Medicine Waltz', 'Bone Bag', etc a spin.
Loved that whole twangy guitars with tribal beats thing they had going on.

Ok..I can’t live with the attempted snark of my Rutles pick for 1978. I thought I could…but it’s bugging me. Let’s just go with this… With a Little Luck - Wings You've already voted for 1983, davey.

Right. I was just doubling back on 78… if that’s ok.

This simply isn't true. 1975 - 16 1976 - 15 1977 - 15 1978 - 16 1979 - 16 1980 - 16 1981 - 14 (my vote to come) 1982 - 13 (JC and I yet to vote) 1983 - 14 (JC and I yet to vote)
