It was one of the first Python things I saw, because it came out when I was 15 and I was just starting to become aware of them. I saw it in the cinema with the Gilliam short as support (which is supposed to be superior to the main feature, according to some). So for that reason, I've got a bit of affection for it.
The Mr. Creosote sketch is the most famous I suppose. That one's worth it for the waiter, like you say - 'just one WAFFER THEEN MEENT?'. A lot of it is much broader and nastier (deliberately?) than what they'd been doing more than a decade earlier, and like you I don't think much is really funny. But it's been ages since I saw it, and I'm not in a rush to go back.
When you see the original series you realise they were much better - much funnier - working for TV and not having to make compromises to fit a longer run-time (although of course this one is broken up into bits). And of course they were younger then, and full of wild ideas. LOTS of wild ideas!

Actually it was the bit afterwards I was thinking of, when they chase him with questions and he's "what do you want from me.."

I think the main problem with it are the sketches devoted to each subject are too long, so that gives it a bit of a flat feel. LoB and Holy Grail are far zippier. The 'Salmon Mousse' is probably my favourite thing.

Well I'm really not keen on any of the films. And I absolutely adore the TV stuff.

Brian is their best film. Grail is funnier but disjointed and less cinematic.

I'm with you D. Grail retains some of the anarchic feel of the tv series. LoB is brilliant, but it feels much slicker.

I guess you could say Grail is a bit like them doing a series of medieval sketches tied together by some vague Arthurian plot but I honestly don't understand how you wouldn't laugh. Of course they have no ending so it just collapses in on itself but who cares?
Brian is slicker and feels like more of a movie with Grail being a trial run but I don't find it quite as funny.

I'm surprised that there was never a film made of Spamalot. Which was very funny and did loads with musical theatre conventions.

Because it's studenty humour. It's a bore. If I hear 'it's only a flesh wound' or 'your auntie smells of elderberries' in silly fucking voices one more fucking time I swear I'll hunt down the surviving Pythons and the results of my endeavours will be more than fucking 'flesh wounds' I can fucking assure you.
