I should have said "humanists" rather than humanitarians.

I think we basically agree. It just seems like you get more enjoyment out of the pure style of ‘Once Upon a Time’ than I do.
That lack of humanity bugs me. Especially when it exploits real life tragedies. I’m not opposed to movies that operate from a POV of amorality, but Tarantino’s films are so gleeful about it. Chinatown pokes at the same basic ideas - but Chinatown is a tragedy, and it doesn’t ask you to be impressed with it’s nihilism.

QT name checks many of my favorite film makers (Fuller, Aldrich.. guys like that). what is it that he admires about them? well, judging by his own work and things he says about them - a great many things. Something it seems he may admire but does not carry over into his own work or appreciations is "humanity". I think many of the film makers he promotes and endorses (and to some extent is influence by) were fundamentally humanitarians. Their films are shot through with calls to decency. sometimes this is done by underlining a lack of decency in the stories they depict but I think many of these films are "message" films. Even if the message of "once upon a time..." is as I've described - well, it's not really much of a message. So, while I like his films and find him very talented he strikes me as sort of like Lenny Kravetz when it seemed like he wanted to be Hendrix. the thing that was missing of course is that he wasn't Hendrix. I agree with every word of this. Dunno that I would. A lot of the filmmakers he likes are pulpy b-movie genre directors, not really socially conscious message driven directors.

Yeah, I mention that in the final paragraph of my original post, Perfesser.

Now, QT casts a very wide net. he references and idolizes films that frankly don't do a whole lot for me. I do respond to enthusiasm however and can go along up to a point as long as I don't want to vomit.

I think the main theme is less about Hollywood and more about fairy tales, and a recognition that film is how they're transmitted nowadays. But that could just be the Joseph Campbell fan in me talking. In any case it's why it's probably my second-favorite film ever by him (Jackie Brown, a movie that did have a lot of heart, is number one for those keeping score at home). I love that Sharon Tate, in the fairy tale version, gets the happy ending she wouldn't get in real life, as well as the fact that the Manson kids are actually treated as dopey teenagers led astray rather than demonically possessed avengers (probably pretty close to the truth).
Stuff like the Bruce Lee scene and the flamethrower tend to detract a bit, but that's Quentin for you.

I loved the Bruce Lee scene! I thought it was the funniest moment in any of his films, a really beautifully-observed pisstake.
Otherwise, I agree with what you've said (Jackie Brown is my favourite too - I didn't really care for anything much after that, mind - not until this one).

They’re so much more cinematic than bullets, which you can’t even see, for fuck’s sake. I saw QT on TV yesterday and he said there were four films he watched with the cast and crew of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood before they started shooting, to get them into the swing of things, so to speak. They were: Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice Model Shop Play It as It Lays Easy Rider The Manson/Helter Skelter thing: I read Revolution in the Head recently and Ian MacDonald comes perilously close to saying that Lennon had been “asking for it” when he finally succumbed to a loony’s bullet. It really made me think.
