If I had the opportunity to meet Bobbie Gentry, who has seemingly not been seen in public or interviewed in over forty years, the first thing I'd ask her is why on earth she chose to shelve this song (it first appeared in 2007 on a "Best Of"). Let's see what G makes of it.
Demo version (I honestly can't decide which I prefer):

Jeez, you'd think there was a CUP on or something...

I'm a big fan of La Gentry, bought her first three or four albums back in the Sixties: she was so much more than her big hits, a genuine auteur pop singer-songwriter with a distinctive and wide-ranging style based in Southern Gothic, but often flying away from it. I've occasionally considered opening a thread on her, but didn't because I thought she would be trashed or ignored and I couldn't face that. I think I preferred the produced version over the demo, but they both please, and act as fine palate cleansers before having to chew over more slim pickings in the final.

It has a magical child-like wonder about it, especially with the spiralling, chiming instrumentation. I do have a compilation, but most of it is in an uptempo country-funk style. I need to get some albums proper. Many thanks Charlie and sorry for the long delay.

Ellen McIlwaine has an interesting history and I find her music pretty distinctive. I was going to use this one in the cup final if I'd made it...I doubt it would have gone down well, those jazzy vocal gymnastics tend to be unpopular but I like stuff like that. Anyway let's see what Loveless thinks..

I need to get some [Bobbie Gentry] albums proper. The albums are a mixed bag, honestly. But her second album The Delta Sweete has latterly become a cult item, and not without reason; I'd suggest you start there and see if you want to investigate further.

Have you heard Mercury Rev's reworking of it, Charlie?

Oh, yeah - you found a good one for me, G. I like the sound of that a lot (what I can only refer to as a sort of intersection of folk and jazz). Thanks for that!
Since my friend Charlie is up and active, I'm going to send him this song.

Gary McFarland was an intriguing cat. I haven't heard this album. I'll try to think of something to send out later today.

Maybe as close as he got to making a mid-early Nilsson record.

The Delta Sweete is pretty fantastic. I was lucky to find a minty original for a stupidly cheap price in an otherwise janky shop (I reckon it fell through the cracks in a "didn't know what they had" kinda way). Conversely (though I've only played it once), I bought an audiophile mono reissue of Ode to Billy Joe based on my obsession with the title track, and...I was utterly dismayed at just how many of the tracks started and were based on that distinctive OTBJ opening guitar figure.

In light of The Delta Sweete and the later Patchwork, I suspect Bobbie was thinking in terms of giving the album a quasi-conceptual through line... but I agree that it doesn't work there. There's still a handful of great songs on that album, though.
