What's not to like? I always get a kick out of this bunch. We've had a copy of the "South Bronx Story" comp since around the time of its release in the early 2000's and some of it's on regular rotation in playlists, etc. I was hoping to come up with something for somebody before responding to this, but nothing's coming to mind yet, so give me a moment or two and I'll be back...

Thanks Harv. There's something delightfully minimal about ZZ Top for me. It's tight, stripped down and just fucking basic. No messing about, no nonsense, just an articulation of the metaphorical idea of a guy working some downright difficult and hard labour job, going to a bar and ordering a beer. I never used to get them and all the other bluesy bands, but them above all I just admire. Gibbons is a fantastic guitarist too. You got me to go back to the album, which is one of my favourite of theirs before they hit the MTV big time - I love El Diablo in particular.
I just checked and see they're playing Wembley in July - I MIGHT ACTUALLY GO.

Anyway, glad you enjoyed it!

I haven't heard that album in a long time and didn't specifically remember that song - but what struck me when I listened to it now was how cool the individual musical parts were (that drum pattern is killer), how different the guitar sounds were from one another, and how tightly-but-loosely they were packed together. It's pretty much always a pleasure to hear a band that can do that that good, even when the lyrics are kinda dumb.

Errrr....it's OK. Right now it just sounds too smooth. I feel I've developed more of a taste for that kind of thing as I get older, but it really depends on my mood. And the time of day. So, you know, in a club, late at night, a bit 'chemically enhanced', that one will bend my brain and lift my soul. Right now, on a dreary Whitehaven morning, it's not doing much. I'll give it another go later. Thanks.

I’ve got a nostalgic pull towards that track. Actually used it successfully as a chat-up line
Catchy.
Better than most of the obscure stuff, at least

I've dragged my feet on this one partly just to give everyone a bit of a break from the thread as nominations are coming around very quickly these days because we have so few posters. But also because I was struggling to think of anything that interesting to say on the track in question. That's not to say I dislike it though, it is infectious and one of those quite memorable hits of the period. It's not a track I feel the need to seek out particularly, but I enjoy hearing it when I come across it.
One of my favourite UK psych bands is Skip Bifferty, who featured future Blockheads John Turnbull and Mickey Gallagher. I'm a big fan of this b-side, but what does Charlie O think?

Skip Bifferty is a name I know well, but music I don't know so well. The interest here clearly isn't in the lyrics, but I like the overall feel of the track - instrumentally, but also the echo (I'm a sucker for that dank sound you get on a lot of UK "underground" records of that period) and the weirdly discombobulated stereo mix - and I find the somewhat homely vocals entirely agreeable in this context. Nice one, G.
