Very enjoyable Ange - cheers! To be honest it's probably a little too generic to become part of my "keepers", I tend to like my instrumentals to go rather more 'out there', but it does have a really vigorous good time vibe.
I'm going to try a Sopwith Camel track on Osgood. Don't know if it'll be his thing, but we'll give it a go! The track's called 'Fazon'.

Thanks for that, G. I had never heard of that band and just found they belonged to the psych SF scene, I would never had guessed. At the start I was fearing the track was going to be too repetitive for my taste, but it has some unexpected turns and instrumental flourishes that were very much up my street. In the end I found it quite enjoyable.
I don't have the time right now to post anything, but will duly do in the morning.

I never did hear that SC album (a reunion album from the '70s). That track is really nice - a bit more of a yacht-rock vibe than I expected! Their first album from 1967 is excessively twee for my tastes (and I have a fairly high tolerance for tweeness), though I do like "Postcard From Jamaica".

There is a bit of an early yacht rock vibe about it, but it's quite jazzy and experimental as well...like a more out there Steve Miller. Couple more favourites.. |

Ah, slack key! Good stuff! Someone more knowledgeable than I could probably pinpoint the precise difference between bottleneck, slack key, and American Primitive guitaring - I assume they're closely related, but it can't be JUST about the ethnicity of the person performing it. I think I actually have this on CD somewhere - at least the cover looks familiar. Guy's a great player, though ultimately the appeal of stuff like this is limited to the performance, unless it's combined with great songwriting, which this isn't. Still enjoyable, though.
I'm curious what G (and maybe Fange) makes of this, from a recording by Marianne Faithfull's guitarist, which I think I might like at least as much as any of hers. Recorded at Compass Point in the early 80s, (as I've said before about it, I'm sure much coke was snorted off the mixing desk), it's slick as can be, almost yacht rock, but I think his understated vocal and the spaciousness in the playing hits me at a deeper level than her less subtle version. The rare slick 80s album that sounds fairly low-key and homemade. Though I'm sure it cost a lot of money to make, most of it unrecouped.

Beautiful guitar playing for sure, but it does take a while to get to that pay off and i'm not sure his vocals are strong enough to carry the song for me to that point. I get what you mean about it probably costing a fair bit despite its low-key feel; the gentle percussion sounds very clearly captured and mixed, and that's the sort of thing that takes time and money usually. Let's see what G things too. |

The song isn't compelling enough for me, the chord changes are a little predictable and so the tune feels quite predictable and drawn out. Sorry!It's clearly done with love and attention to detail, just not my thing ultimately.
