Was a big favourite of mine at the time, although how good it was depended on the guests and topic. However I liked its unpredictability. I still think it would work well today, but I don't think any channel would be brave enough to do it.

I've seen a couple of these. Tony Benn and ex-CIA officer Miles Copeland sparring over official secrets and the one with Robin Ramsey of Lobster Mag discussing sex abuse rings stands out in memory.
It's like looking into a portal of what Channel Four should have been like but never was.

It's like looking into a portal of what Channel Four should have been like but never was. I think it was like that for few years, under Jeremy Isaacs anyway. It started to change under Michael Grade. Now of course it is a completely different channel, like watching Debussy change into Stock, Aitkin and Waterman.

In the early 00s they had a load of leftfield documentaries and short films which they showed through the early hours under the 'Outside Zone' banner. I used to record it on VHS and just let it run through. Oddly I can't find much mention of it online, I might have been the only one watching. I miss good late night TV.
C4 News is still strong in fairness.

We were blessed for a few years. Apart from CountdownMy new favourite conspiracy theory is that Countdown was set up to send coded messages to spies, like a shortwave numbers station.

All I remember is the infamous Ollie Reed episode which really could never happen now, for many reasons.

(22:27 onwards)
I mean, he's acting like a drunken 'asshole' and it wasn't remotely pleasant for her, but if we're taking sides I'm flying FLAG OLLIE, quite honestly. Lots of comic moments in his last minute or two there. And he stopped that old bore blathering on about the death penalty too.

I’ve been watching a few Reed interviews recently. When he was sober he comes across as lucid and thoughtful (his views on women were very old fashioned mind). His reasoning for drinking (he liked pubs and he loved people basically and loved watching them and loved their stories) is perfectly sound, especially for an actor.
I know some people will look at him drunkenly dancing and wince and feel it was exploitative (it was but then Ollie seemed happy to oblige knowing he had found a chat show niche) but there is also something magnificent about seeing somebody on live TV doing the kind of shit the rest of us would only do in the privacy of our own homes after a bottle of wine or two.
You don’t get people like Reed in popular culture anymore. That world is so much duller than it used to be.
I love watching interviews with actors of that vintage and beyond. Talking Pictures on BBC2 is good for this sorta thing: Niven, Maclaine etc. Fabulous stuff.

He's been shaky and confused for a while I think. I actually find it a bit hard to watch sometimes because of him
