1997 A little bit of Bob James goes a long way, but this is like really good Bob James Air - La Femme d’Argent Funnily enough that track was my choice...until I looked it up and found out it was actually 1998! So you'll need to change it.

My turn to go obvious for 1997, skipping the curios. I actually own surprisingly little from 1997, but I think this would've been top of the pops anyway.

"Damage" Yo la Tengo
This one was obvious for me..Another deep and varied year, with tons of albums owned, so the "Contenders" will be interesting..

1997 Spiritualized-"Come Together"
The late 90's were a pretty druggy time for me and my friends. Acid in particular. It was all about getting 'out there' and this album, along with D.J. Shadow, Primal Scream, Chemical Brothers, Radiohead etc was a big part of our listening at the time.

I was going to pick Ladies and Gentlemen... but Come Together is equally good.
Waiting for Markus to appear, otherwise...

1997
1997 was pretty far from the best year of my life. In fact it was a real low point. I'd dropped out of university after one year and was back at home on the dole with little idea of what to do next. Musically things had dipped too after the previous years with Ok Computer dominating the landscape and only a handful of albums that I recall fondly these days (In It For The Money, Homogenic, Dots and Loops). Thankfully something new and odd was brewing in the indie backwaters of East Neuk in Fife (yes, Fife) and along came The Beta Band to sprinkle some sonic stardust in the summer of 1997 when they released their debut EP, Champion Versions. The EP was dominated, of course, by the slow building glory of the magnificent Dry The Rain. For all their weirdness and quirkiness - at times a flaw perhaps - there was something undeniably classic and satisfying about Dry The Rain that they never quite reached again. From its modest, slightly ramshackle beginning (acoustic, slide guitar, fella busking on a street) it builds beautifully as a series of climactic moments where the additional musical layers (drums, bass, horn, vocals) create something grandiose and unexpectedly epic and beautiful. The section where the funky and huge bass line emerges from the hashish haze climaxing with that horn part is not only regal and perfect it communicates something that was becoming increasingly rare in the music world by this point that would become almost non-existent after that; something ecstatic and profound, akin to a personal, almost religious revelation ("I will be your light").

Yes there was something epic about it and they were a breath of fresh air when they emerged. Really glad to see 'Dry The Rain' picked.

Radiohead - Paranoid Android
This would probably my 90s pick if I had to choose just one.

1998
With apologies for stealing Freap's thunder, Moon Safari was my favourite album of the year and La Femme D'Argent was always the track that wowed me the most. I still find it's combination of playful electric piano and that great bass line intoxicating.

ELLIOT SMITH - "Sweet Adeline"
It wasn't my only choice for this year (and I'm hopeful that someone will pick at least one of my contenders), but...here he is, here it is. He'd been hyped to me a year earlier, but...nothing I'd heard demonstrated the force of this record (I think MOJO at the time suggested in their review that he'd been taking vitamin/iron supplements...and I get it, he's finnaly full screen front and center). I saw him months later at the Astoria fronting a trio (Sam Coomes and Janet Weiss) that was as hard hitting and heavy as I'd ever need anything to be. From this album (he'd do more great work, but...nothing quite at this standard and focus) I could have picked any number of songs (Tomorrow Tomorrow, Pitseleh, Waltz #1, Amity, A Question Mark, Independence Day), but...this is the one that blew the doors wide open.
