It's wonderful. I convinced Rayge to watch it with me when he wasn't at all sure about it, delightful. We look forward to watching the second one.

I watched the first two episodes of "Watership Down". two to go. better than I expected but it could still go either way.
"A Star is Born" - I've seen the other versions and figured it couldn't be any worse than the 70's one. predictable. good acting. I find Gaga a little lackluster in the "star quality" department and I think her songs are pretty samey. still, a good melodrama if you like that sort of thing. Sam Elliot is always good. Spoiler Alert: Bradley Cooper pees his pants.
Spiderman: into the Spiderverse. it was nice seeing an animated feature using so many comic book-ish tricks. it has panels, voice balloons, different styles. it's still just a Spiderman movie but it was brisk and colorful. if you're going to do something that's been done a bunch of times then you'd better bring something new to the table - they did.
the Green Book: Hey, whattaya know, I guess I like Viggo Mortenson.

Ain't this just fabulous? Unashamedly quaint, sincere, and gleeful. Also as a piece of cinema it has great audio-visual storytelling and jokes, its script is actually tightly woven with setups and payoffs for every well-realised character. This is what a family film ought to be. The "dogs must be carried" escalator gag is a classic. Paddington 2 is bloody good, too, it's probably even better than the first, in a similar style.

But the reviews are across-the-board terrible! Not so! Very mixed, at least here. The main character's family has been critical of it, mainly 'cause it's told from the pov of his driver - they are claiming the two were never friends, that it was strictly an employer/employee relationship. I can see why that's an important distinction for them to draw considering the racial element to the story, but it's really not the usual cultural appropriation story, not to my eyes, anyway. It's an 'Odd Couple' road trip story - it's more about how different they are - to me the racial element is almost incidental, though the very different levels of freedom the two are accorded by society at large is not whitewashed either - it's just not the main thrust of the story. I liked it a lot, though it did have some "Hollywood" elements to it. The music and art direction are great, for sure.

I recently binged on a whole host of classic (and forgotten classic) films as Filmstruck was winding down; what a phenomenal service that was. I'm optimistic about the Criterion Channel's upcoming launch, but there was just the perfect blend of Criterion and Turner Classic Movies on Filmstruck.
The other night, I watched Stalker, the Tarkovsky film. Strange and fascinating, and gorgeous to boot.
And on a very different note, my wife and I are finishing up Game of Thrones. We only started it a few months ago. I wouldn't say it's "great," but it is a load of fun - I'd describe it as a ridiculous blend of Tolkein, Dynasty, and Skinemax.

I wouldn't say it's "great," but it is a load of fun - I'd describe it as a ridiculous blend of Tolkein, Dynasty, and Skinemax. It probably isn't great "art": does it speak to anyone, really, or have any really serious message? There is some political and social comment, but I'm not sure it has anything much to say about the human condition. Within its genre it's influential and has pushed boundaries with its characters and its subversion of heroic tropes - although the "anyone can die, any time" thrill has been forgotten over the last two or three seasons. But yeah, it's maybe not a major work of "art". It is, though world-class entertainment. It has phenomenal action scenes and spectacular scenery; unpredictable plotting and surprising character arcs; epic drama and Machiavellian scheming; classy actors delivering weighty and witty dialogue; labyrinthine relationships and power struggles; dragons and zombies and giants; Jerome Flynn; swashbuckling and sex; lavish production values and intelligent writing. The only thing it needs is more chicken. It's not been at its best over the last couple of series, since they got past where the books are up to, but I'm still looking forward to the endgame in spring. Time for a "predictions" thread maybe!

the old dark house (1932) on blu-ray.
an all-time favourite that's never looked better.
thesiger's performance is priceless.

I've always had this suspicion that Game of Thrones isn't what it's cracked up to be. Partly, I admit, just because of its fantasy setting and because I'm sceptical of all the hype.
I've heard there's lots of fanny though so I guess there's that.

There are some really compelling characters, and some fantastic acting (Peter Dinklage in particular).

Is it as good as Twin Peaks? No, but then again, what is? (Er, assuming that I can ignore the bulk of season 2 of Twin Peaks for this comparison)

I think I'd struggle to take anything with Sean Bean in it seriously to be honest

Black Narcissus
An odd one. I wasn't sure if the increasing delirium of the story quite worked but it sure looked great. Also reminded me that I really should flirt with hot huns whilst wearing absurdly tight shorts, smoking a pipe and walking around topless revealing my hairy man chest a lot more. #lifegoals

The lass and I also started to watch Black Mirror (season 3) intending to watch all the remaining episodes but after watching one about killer bees I decided one would be enough.
I'll stick with the Twilight Zone instead.
