The LighthouseIt's a film that I've been meaning to see for a while because I really liked Eggers first feature 'The Witch'. It's got great performances from Pattinson and, particularly, Dafoe and the expressionist style cinematography is arresting. There's something a bit too self-conscious and one-dimensional about it though, so it's an interesting, rather than great, film for me. I quite enjoyed it. It looked great and the two leads seemed to be revelling in the roles. It is more than watchable.

Those two guys wouldn't have had all those problems if Pattinson's character had just eaten the seagull he killed. That's the rule out on the coast - if you kill a seagull, you have to eat it.

I've always enjoyed the original version, but this is definitely better with the added scenes and music. Looks fabulous in 4K, too.

Trance (Danny Boyle 2013)
It looks like I've had my Christmas turkey a few days early. This is quite the worst film I can remember seeing from a major director. Near the end a major character is given the option of forgetting everything he's seen, if only the audience had been availed of that option. I find it fascinating that such a bad film can get the green light, surely, at some point, someone should've said 'this is going to be shit, let's not bother'.

Scott's directorial debut. A prominent role for Martin Sheen, though he wasn't famous enough to get a poster credit at this point. Pretty dumb film. I can see anti-vaxx types enjoying it though... Like they'd ever dig this deep...

When Harry met Sally.
Still holds up as a true classic.

The 5th Mike Leigh film I've seen and it ranks right in the middle. Brenda Blethyn's portrayal of the pathetic Cynthia made it difficult for me to feel much empathy for her. Perhaps that was the point, but I thought she could have toned down the shrillness of her voice. Murder worthy stuff. The only likeable character is Hortense, though the cast is solid throughout. Much too long. I was definitely glad when it ended.

Funnily enough I watched Another Year the other day. I have mixed feelings about Leigh, but I did find Lesley Manville's performance quite heartbreaking.

The only others I've seen are Career Girls, Naked, Life Is Sweet & Meantime. Loved Meantime. One of the reviews I read after watching that last night labeled him more of a TV director. And I definitely get that from what I've watched.

Naked and Peterloo, although very different films, are both pretty cinematic I'd say.

When I first watched Meantime I didn't know it was originally made for TV. I wish we had TV that intelligent here. But Secrets & Lies really plodded along. I thought a half hour could have easily been cut.
I look forward to watching more of his work. He always has excellent casts.

Watched Being The Ricardos this afternoon. I found it reasonably enjoyable, but (as with Aaron Sorkin's Chicago 7 flick last year) a bit hackneyed and predictable and sometimes hard to swallow. Nicole Kidman nails Lucille Ball's (off-screen) voice and attitude, which is impressive, but she doesn't come close to nailing her comedy in the recreated I Love Lucy bits; Javier Bardem gives a great performance but is so physically and vocally different from Desi Arnaz that I found it a little hard to suspend disbelief. The film presupposes some basic knowledge about their pre-television careers and romance - there are a lot of flashbacks that don't announce themselves as such, which I would think might be confusing for some. And as is not unusual with such things, there are liberties taken with the real life timeline: the TV episode they're shown working on ("Fred And Ethel Fight") was IRL filmed and aired LONG before the Red Scare scandal that is one of the film's dramatic linchpins, as was the story arc of Lucy's pregnancy (which is one of the other dramatic linchpins). (And yes, I looked that shit up, just out of skepticism.)
I've probably made it sound less enjoyable than it actually was.

My favourite thing from him, which I've seen more times than I care to count, is an early TV thing he did he did called Nuts in May. I don't know how well it's humour would translate to an American audience though.

I never thought of this as an Xmas film before, and it's not of course, but it is full of warmth while feeling very cold. Suitable enough for me. Gets better every time I watch it. Or maybe I just get older.
