That's the balance though, because (depending on your individual circumstances) there comes a sweet spot where you're earning more but you're paying more tax at the same time. So as illogical as it sounds, some times it better not to take a raise (you can't really) or go for a better paying job. Unless that better paying job has better chances of promotion etc. Knowing your tax situation inside and out makes a big difference. My mate is a plumber who earns around 40g a year because he has no incentive to go much higher due to income tax and for the extra amount of work required he doesn't consider it's worth it. Modern Britain. Genius.

It's universal in Eire and britain that plumbers do extra work, it's just the tax man, sorry person, doesn't know about it. LOL. Your mate's earning well over 40 a year.

I've read that a couple earning around £50k each is optimum where did you read this? fucking Country Life? He's talking about work/life balance and the requirements put on you once you go above a certain amount. Where I work I would say once you get to around 50-60 the pressure and time demands get noticeably higher and once you go above that it's a bit like a "my life is my job" scenario. I have a mate who's a managing director so earning a basic wage of 100+ and he's working 12+ hour days on a regular basis. He even gets up at 2am to take corporate calls with clients in Australia and America. It's nothing I could do but he plans on retiring before he's 50. I sit below 50g and I work a 35 hour week now (they've reduced it from 37) and that's it. I'm tired some days of course but I wouldn't be tempted to go much higher than I am now because of the hassle and the pressure. I can do everything I need to do in life but.....I certainly won't be retiring at 50.

Time is infinitely more important than money beyond having enough to survive. Taxes are irrelevant

I might be the only person that doesn't want to retire (as of today, when i get to that age it could be different) at 50. Me da retired at 55 from the guards and he was bored shitless after he made the garden look immaculate. He soon got other side jobs to keep him busy. I don't know if i want to end up like that. Maybe a less hours job or something. Even a new hobby can't take up all your days, every day until you're worm food.

Well one of the reasons i asked you about saving was, are you planning on living off the state pension when you reach the proper age. Then just say to teaching "looks like it's 'fuck this shit o'clock, coan out!'?
