I'm a bit indifferent about him to be honest, he ability to put people at ease is always talked about. Then you see the Helen Mirren interview and you think, what a cunt. He still provided a lot of great interviews, but he's just one of those people that gives me a 'something's off about him, just don't know what' vibe.

It was always about the guests. I didn't particularly like him. His stint on Film (Whatever year it was) was awful.

My wife had an argument with his wife at the Braemar gathering. Parky stepped in, just leave it Mary, he said.
As dear Johnny wrote. He was essential viewing back in the day.

He was the last really good chat show host, how much is because of the need for everything to be short and snappy, probably quite a bit. I think it started with Johnny Ross, or Clive Anderson, the lack of interest in the guest, the eagerness to get a preprepared punchline in. Might not be as many celebs of the calibre of Ali or Billy Connolly these days, either.

Early years guests were there to be themselves and engage in a conversation not roll out preplanned anecdotes.

It all seems quite "old world" now. Proper guests. Charismatic, talented adults talking about their lives.
Ali, Niven, Connolly etc. You knew who the stars were and it wasn't Parky. He knew it too.
RIP

We don't have many standards on Preludin, if any, but calling someone a cunt on an RIP thread is a bit much for my taste. If someone who died was not to your taste, put it in context, or better still, just don't reply.

He always looked like the cat that got the cream, difficult to think of a tv personality from that era who held himself in such high regard.

Especially as you weren't even born yet. You just can't help yourself, mouthing off about stuff and trampling all over threads with your received opinions and half-arsed ideas, can you?

No, this has been building up for a while. I've been quite restrained, really. I'm putting you on the naughty step for a day.

I caught a bit of the tribute programme on bbc1 last night. Although it was a Parkinson family production and he was being interviewed by his son, Parkinson came across very well and didn't shy away from times he admitted that he got it wrong, both with Meg Ryan and Helen Mirren. He also teared up when talking a few times, something that his younger self would never have contemplated.
And his favourite interview was Jacob Bronowski writer and presenter of The Ascent of Man, rather than a Hollywood legend.

I saw something recently where he said quite flatly that he didn't like Ali. This comes after years of talking about how much he admired him. I found that a bit strange.
