A big shout for SUSSEX. Of course, dreary people will say "oh but it's WEST and EAST Sussex", but ultimately we all know it as Sussex. Now resplendent with its own sparkling wine, grown on the chalky soils of the Eastern part of the county, Sussex has pretty much everything you want : Brighton is a vibrant city with a charming bit of grot; the charming Chichester is nestled near the marshlands of West Wittering, there's the wonderfully titled BOGNOR Regis, immortalised by George V saying "Bugger Bognor" just before he died; the quiet, secluded leafiness of Horsham; the wonderfully sculpted South Downs rising up near the chalk cliffs of Beachy Head, and even the weirdness of new towns like Haywards Heath and the delightfully titled Crawley. The coast between Brighton and Littlehampton is a continuous stretch of low density seaside towns that emerged in the early 20th century and then started declining by the late part such as Worthing, Shoreham-by-Sea, Lancing and Rustington, now mostly punctuated by Polish supermarkets, Vape shops and a faint air of regret. I am not a Sussex resident, but draw its joys through osmosis, living but a mile or so from the East Sussex borders. My mother was Sussex born and bred, whilst my father spent his early adult years playing cricket at Wisborough Green, perhaps one of the most archetypal village greens in England. Anyway, time to articulate your fondness for COUNTIES.

Well obviously it is the ceremonial county of Rutland. It is one of the few relatively unspoiled parts of the country.

Naturally, West Yorkshire is the best- the best people come from there. No seaside though. Just rivers and canals full of trollies.
Dorset’s a contender. We’ve got it all here. More diverse than Sussex. Better weather than the North.

Cumbria is quite clearly the best.

Southern counties might be pretty, in that neat-lawns-and-hedges way, but the people down there are terribly dull.

Just out of interest, I was wondering how many of you have visited (not merely driven through) all the counties of England, as I believe I have done? They all have their charms (and ugy bits, too), and there is an extraordinary variation, due mainly to the effects of Britain's unique geology and geography.

As with me, though, it seems that the Midlands are visited less often. And I probably spent less time in Cumbria than anywhere else, though.

As a point of order, The Scillies are part of Cornwall (the ceremonial county, at least), Wight of Hampshire, and Man is neither a county, nor indeed a part of the UK, let alone England, but a Crown Dependency like the Channel Islands.

Cool, I am even more impressed by my extensive travels.

I love the fact that a person of Shropshire is called a Salopian.
