Muhammad Ali was a fantastic snooker player I’ll have you know. He once beat Joe Davis with one hand tied behind his back and an uppercut as Joe was about to pot his last red.

I see a pattern carry on, G 🙂 They're not northern enough for you J. You want Thora Hird in there knitting and Alan Bennett talking about buttered muffins.

Syd and Eddie were from the particular bit of Wythenshawe, South Manchester that I grew up in. Northern Moor. Syd used to knock about with my mates uncle in the 60's. I knew Syd's (Syd Mead) daughter Angela a little bit.
To be fair, they put a bit back, built a community centre and stuff, so fair play, but...
Syd was the very definition of a straight man, wasn't he? Could have been a shop dummy. By comparison, Ernie Wise and Mike Winters are Reeves and Mortimer.
I find it hilarious and fascinating that the BBC threw so much money at them and they were on for fucking YEARS!
Saturday night. Big Time. Just after the paedo slot.
On the Cook'd and Bomb'd comedy forum, which I sometimes look at, there's a great thread about the 1980 Christmas show. The thread is a really funny read, but the OP's post includes a YT link to the show and it's jaw droppingly bad. Sub, sub end of the pier stuff. Some of the sketches are like the level of a kid's school play.
I have a certain affection for their stand up bits. Eddie was the kind of guy you sometimes encountered as a kid. Your uncle's daft mate or a local character. Like Peter Kay's character , 'Uncle Knobhead', The sort of person who, when emboldened by drink, comes to believe that saying a phrase, accompanied by gestures/props, equals hilarity.
Hence, stuff like ...
Eddie -(blacked up and in drag) "Ah'm simply t'best, better than all the rest .."
Syd- (Incredulous) "You're not Tina Turner!"
Eddie -(Indignant) Ey Syd, I am Syd ...etc .
And on and on
The past is another country.
God bless 'em. X
