Many years ago (I'm not gonna look it up) I went to the movies with Michael Hurley's then-girlfriend (just look at me namedrop!) to see Hoffa. She was not ordinarily one to be overly offended by coarse language, but she was shaken by the liberal use of "cocksucker" in that movie. She told me, afterward, that she had no idea men used that word so much. Her tone suggested disappointment if not downright disillusionment. It made me reflect - although I don't think I said this to her - that it was kind of a weird term to use as an insult anyway, especially if you're a man. It's a basic homophobic insult isn't it?

Yes, very much so. Which, I think, ultimately dates it. I mean, I'm surrounded - to some extent - by younger generations, and...my God...they just don't give a fuck about any of this shit. I was watching the Ronno doc last night, and my youngest (who is, for the sake of this conversation, quite nonchalantly gay) came and sat with me for a bit (right when they were talking about the taboos and homophobia of the Spiders era...the very notion that Dave putting his arm around a mate on television MEANT something...my SON must have thought all of these people were from Mars just for how quaint and barbaric the times and their reminisces must have sounded). I realize I'm not writing this from a dead end street in Hull, but...I think if you called a kid a "fag" now, the response would be a sort of baffled "Is that supposed to be an insult?" Progress and regress (and, apologies, DIGRESS) obviously go hand in hand (famously), but...this is an area where I really don't worry for the kids.

'fag' and 'faggot' never really had much currency as an insult in the UK, where fags are either youthful gophers/slaves in some private schools, or, much more commonly, cigarettes. I expect the latter usage comes from the original meaning of 'stick', which is probably also the derivation of the phrase 'old faggot' to describe an ole woman, particularly a spinster. Over here, in the ’60s and ’70s at least, it was homo, queer, queen, poof, bugger, or nancy, all of which could be used, depending on tone of voice, as vicious condemnation through affectless description to mild affection.

Bydd y cachu yn taro'r ffan os ydyn ni'n galw'r ffwciwr hwnnw'n cont i also found some links detailing Welsh swear words, but many of them have the feel of modern inventions rather than words that have been used for a long time. I suspect that in the past, the Welsh language survived in parts of Wales where the chapel influence was very strong, which in turn meant the language was quite moderate. The strongest swear word I remember my father saying was 'duw' which just means God.
