- anybody who purchased a Keith Moon solo album should have got a coupon for a free meal or something
- Townshend's Interviews are almost always equal parts interesting and exasperating
- I made the right call not seeing them after Moon died. I could have seen the "by numbers" tour but I thought the album stunk. It has a lot of admirers lately but, I'm sorry. I think every song is a big nothing (except "slip kid" which I sort of like.)
- "smash your head against the wall" is every bit as good a Who solo album as "empty glass" (maybe better)

"Who are You" is almost as big a dud as "Who by Numbers".
It's worse, way worse, it's worse than Face Dances. Who Are You is an absolutely terrible album with the most hideous synth braying this side of Tinseltown Rebellion.
the only song I really like is "905"
905 and Trick Of the Light - both Entwistle compositions. Townsend's songwriting ability had completely dried up
Kenny Jones never had a chance.
No, he didn't and he wasn't the problem - it was Townsend trying to write Genesis songs for Who albums.
"Live at Leeds" deserves all the attention it gets in ANY iteration.
I'm a Live At Leeds agnostic. I love side one, dislike Magic Bus in any incarnation, and would have preferred individual songs to the My Generation medley. I don't think Townsend had the chops for a jam band.

Yes, but the cover was good.
Townshend's Interviews are almost always equal parts interesting and exasperating
I get irritated by them for the most part.

I saw them in 79 - it was the first show after Cincinnati. It wasn't bad, and I cut them some slack for the circumstances, but it wasn't life affirming either. I saw them again in 82 and it was terrible.

It's better - My Size is as good as the James Gang.

My 'controversial' Who opinions (I love them, generally):
1966 & 1967 is, was, and evermore shall be, their peak.
Quadrophenia is too much Roger, not enough Pete.
Not only is Who By Numbers not a dud, it's their best 70s studio album. (Leeds wins for best overall.0
They sucked from about 1982-2017 or so. They've been pretty great ever since. The show I saw was more impressive, at least (considering the relative ages of the performers), than the one I saw in '82.
Their last good album, however, is still over 40 years ago.

Sell Out is their only good album
Tommy is cack and was the beginning of the end for the greatest British singles band.
When Moon died, so did the group, for me. I've never listened to anything recorded since
Live at Leeds is not a good album. The Eddie Cochran cover is an embarrassment
They payed live in the gym at my college in 1969, but I didn't go see them because I was revising for my final exams. Huge error.

The Eddie Cochran cover is an embarrassment I think you're thinking of Blue Cheer.

I still hold to the old common opinion that Who's Next is their high-water mark. But I don't feel the need to play it ever again.
Tommy would benefit of some major slimming and some a-la-Who's-Next sound treatment. Still it features a bunch of really great songs.
Quadrophenia has always been too long. But I love 5:15.
Sell Out is great, but this ain't my Who (I arrived to it very very late)
I agree with fearlessfreap about the original Live at Leeds. I do like the first CD release with the extra tracks.

- "I Can See For Miles" was the best thing I had ever heard coming out of my radio at that point.
- I think "Tommy" has some speed bumps but is a good double album. I think it's overrated as a Rock Opera or whatever and underrated as a rock album. they were pretty goddam tight. I mean, that overture thing is the BAND, right?! well, shazam!
- I'm the opposite of 'hatz on Quadrophenia - I think it has just the right amount of Daltrey. I think Townshend shot his wad on that one in a lot of ways but the band is even tighter. I always thought Pete got a little caught in the weeds with the ARPS but that's sort of what makes it stand out. I REALLY like "the punk meets the Godfather" I think it melds the spirit of theWho of old with the 70's Who as well as anything did.

One thing I find interesting about them. I've seen hundreds of shows. Other than AC/DC, there was the fewest amount of women at the Who shows than any concert in a large (non club) venue I've ever seen. Rolling Stones? - tons of women, The Police? They outnumbered the men. The Who? You'd see more women at a dice game in an alley behind a bar. Maybe it was the venues, but I doubt it.

The Eddie Cochran cover is an embarrassment. It was their last great single! (It did sound stronger on the 45 [US, at least] than on the album, and "Heaven And Hell" on the B-side sure didn't hurt.)
