me neither. I'm very fond of Annette Bening.I thought she almost single-handedly lifted "American Beauty" to a place where I thought the hype was justified. As for NYAD, unfortunately those challenging life-changing challenge movies seldom make me look up from my phone nowadays.
I am fond of her too.

watching the Oscars is something we've always done as a family. I skipped it a few times when I wasn't with a family but if I AM with a family then we are going to watch it. it's always a punishment in many ways. If I NEVER hear Billy Crystal break into song again, I'm fine with that. it's always a pleasure in certain ways. these, for me, are usually spontaneous things nobody predicted. or WERE they spontaneous? we'll never know. that's show biz!sometimes you think they get it right & sometimes you think they get it ALL WRONG.
I'll tell you one aspect of the Oscars that I never really understood and that's the whole "SNUBBED" thing. I mean, I get it. if the film gets lots of noms and a key person gets left out then it's notable. BUT, is "SNUB" really the best word?
I mean, take this year. I enjoyed Barbie and I'm real happy to see both Margot Robbie AND Greta Gerwig sitting on top of the world. I think both are super talented and I might have rooted for them both. so they aren't nominated. big whoop. I mean, of course it's amusing that KEN was nominated instead of Barbie in the Barbie movie. Of course it's notable who wasn't nominated just like it always is.
BUT. let's get real. the next movie either of those ladies makes could very well be the biggest payday of their lives. snubbed? they are on their way UP the way I look at it.

Greta Gerwig really needn't worry much about respect from the 'big wigs' of Hollywood. She is now officially one of them.
Yes, she deserved a nom. But I doubt she's losing any sleep over it, so I don't see why I should.
Anyway, as I've done in years past, I'll comment on the noms I've seen so far.
This is a preview - I'm still at work - but Barbie and Flowers of the Killer Moon - both of which I liked a great deal - are up first.

No big surprises, eh? Nothing much to get excited about either.
I like Emma Stone but being weird for two and a half hours is hardly Oscar-worthy.
Good to see the documentary on Mariupol get awarded. It's on the BBC in a couple of days.
Maybe I should watch Oppenheimer

It's on the BBC in a couple of days. Maybe I should watch OppenheimerOppenheimer is a well acted film, with overbearing score and need of a tighter editor. If one only has cursory knowledge of his history, the story is involving. Disagree on the Emma Stone being weird thing. The performance was a bit more nuanced than just "Weird". That said, Gladstone should have one. Same for Scorsese and the score. Flower Moon wasn't my choice for Best Picture, though (That being American Fiction) Otherwise, the ceremony had it's good and bad winners, like all Oscars and the broadcast had it's hits and misses as well.

Flower Moon wasn't my choice for Best Picture, though (That being American Fiction) I only just discovered that American Fiction was based on Percival Everett's Erasure. Not read it in ages, but I loved that book. I read that and Philip Roth's The Human Stain at around the same time, and while they're both wonderful novels, it was hard not to compare and contrast the similar subject matter coming from an elderly white academic and a young up and coming black writer. It's so scurrilously funny, so over the top and furious at the kind of niche that black writers are encouraged to force themselves into.

Nothing to rival Cocaine Bear presenting last year. Kimmel reading that mean tweet and the set-up to the "best costume" award were fun.
I liked seeing past winners discuss their admiration for current nominees. yeah, I know, making movies isn't curing cancer but if you take them seriously then it's nice to hear others doing the same (up to a point)
Happy Belated Birthday, Yoko!
