You forget how funny it is. I saw it again at the cinema recently and was chuckling throughout. The kid is fantastic. Has one of those "old" faces.
Oh I fancied him! Old rubber lips!

I find quite a lot of the lines funny ..Chas trying to waffle when he's trying to get the room "I'm a juggler..I need a bohemian atmosphere", describing the inhabitants of the house to his mate "It's a right piss-hole. Long hair, beatniks, druggists, free love, foreigners." It's difficult to know how much of the humour was intended. It's an aspect of the film that tends to be overlooked, but it's quite an important part of its appeal I think. After all I'm sure it wasn't its Borgesian exploration of identity that made it Sean Ryder's favourite film!

I honestly don't know how much was intentional. It's partly the exaggerated tone of the film and the performances of the gangsters who obviously weren't all professional actors. Harry Flowers, say, and fucking Dennis (who was an actor I know)! They deliver lines in a funny/odd way. There's actually a knowing campness that makes it funny I think. Amusing.
Plus it's very quotable so naturally some lines are catchphrases...."we've been courteous.." and so on. You end up quoting them along with the film and chuckling away.
It really entertains and it's the above combined with the artier, experimental elements that make it so potent for me. It's an uncanny mix.

I don't think I'm going to let you stay in the film business.
