a heavyweight contest. I love both but I have a huge affinity with the hutcherson track which provided the soundtrack during a memorable trip from Los Angeles to San Francisco..

I like B, but am not sure it has 7 minutes worth of staying power on that one riff. The playing's cool, but it could use a bit more motion, a la Ornette or similar.
A does a better job of standing out to my ears, and deserves credit for avoiding the hits in favor of this one, which should have been.

Both very good. Sam and Dave's energy is always very appealing, although this is a little generic. I do prefer B's cool vibe here. The track just saunters doesn't it?

A strong start to this Cup! it's great to see these two excellent tracks alongside each other. It WOULD be close if we were voting for the studio cuts of both, but the live performance in A is compromised by having that fabulous main riff buried under a load of banging drums and fucking about. And it's too fast anyway. I love Sam and Dave tho' (I'm wearing a Stax T right now!), there's real magic there (to quote Goat Boy ) What I've heard of Hutcherson I really like, and this one is smashing (is 'Ummh' on this album too? someone recommended it a while back and it's a big favourite). I'm going for B

B is a slice of classic Blue Note, sauntering along freely and with eloquence to my vote.

A most excellent match. Gotta give it to Sam and Dave, though it feels a bit generic. But I would possibly vote for them singing the Spanish lottery. A

B, but I’ll bet A will be better than the majority of the other winners.

Like most, I dug the hell out of that round. Great footage of Sam & Dave but I’m feeling the vibes of Bobby H the most this evening. I really ought to get some more of his stuff, jazz I can really get behind.

Hmm, I don't know if I'm just being influenced by the video, but A sounds very much like a variety show introduction. I guess it's alright, though pretty predictable fare. Seems lacking in weight. Not sure the live recording quality does it any favours.
I'm not sure if B is languid, or if it's just slow. Taking an age to do anything, and what it's doing seems largely best suited to a pimped-out elevator. Not much to grab my interest in this opening round, it's like the 70s cup all over again.

Great start. How joyful are Sam and Dave, man. Such a powerful vocal performance, it's just a shame the live sound leaves a bit to be desired, with the guitar so buried in the mix. Wonderful stuff though, pure Stax goodness there. It's a shame that it has to meet this Bobby Hutch and Harold Land tune though, which is all kinds of brilliant. The rock-solid but languid groove is the perfect platform for the Hutch to rattle off some fantastic vibes playing, i could listen to him play all day. Mickey Roker is the secret weapon though; a very under-appreciated drummer i think, who played on dozens of fantastic sessions. Tough call, but...
