'Call On Me' is great - I love the guitars and the rave-up ending, but 'Easy Lover' is pushing all the right buttons for me today.

What an entertaining tie! A is ace Captain, groovy psych pop, you could've seen easily as this being a hit. And B is great too - a brave, some might say foolhardy, pick with this crowd - but no issues from me. Big shouldered pastel pop. Just a pity its up against A.

B - the best Phil Collins song by miles. Would have gone to Beefheart for some of the other "Safe as Milk" tracks. Like "Zig Zag Wanderer". That thing is power.

I do tend to prefer Safe as Milk Beefheart but this one, despite the wild nature of the playing, is about as uninteresting a song as he ever did. I thought the Phil Collins one was a joke but it's not bad. There's energy in the playing, and it's catchy. It's the missing link between the Ghostbusters theme and 'Hold the Line' by Toto, not that anybody has spent much time searching for one.
B just about.

a An attempt by the Don to write a conventional love song, presumably to get a 'hit'. How did that work out for you, Mr Vliet. The incorporation if the main four-note riff from Then He Kissed Me towards the end is a bit of a highlight, but I thought this was one of the less good tracks on SAM. Still, 4.5 / 10 b I was afraid that curating this competition was going to involve me having to listen to someone on my list. While I have no views about Mr Collins' prowess on 'tubs', which I am sure is in every way full of seed and built like a brick shithouse, I don't like his former band (also on list), his voix ordinaire, his smug baldy git face or his personality as revealed in records and interviews, I've nothing against Mr Bailey apart from his membership of a 'funk' band, so I listened. And what do you know, big surprise, I thought it was competently performed, wholly predictable, rubbish, despite a bit of shreddy gweetar at the end. 3 / 10
