You're either in the market for Postcard era OJ or not - that just-about-to-collapse momentum is an exhilarating to these ears. As is the unutterably groovy B, absolutely not lazy or standard to me. Crikey, these are both terrific picks. Um.

A won't play for me; is it this one?
If it is, it's fine, but B is more my thing.

More or less. The one posted originally is a slightly different recording but there's not much difference.

This is a coin-toss for me as neither really thrill me too much. Collins' voice is a bit of a deal breaker I suppose.

Much as I like Spanky Wilson I've yet to hear a track of hers that really soars above the crowd. So it's the clean-living Glaswegians for me.

Orange Juice weren't as great as some make them out to be but they did hit gold sometimes. This one isn't gold but it's pretty good, with the vibrant backing lifting it above B, which is yet another generic R&B cover of a hoary old rock song. Nice drums but nothing much to interest me, I tired of this kind of thing long ago.

a Scottish pop really had a big moment in the early 80s with the Postcard and Fast labels. Apart from Aztec Camera's first single, the Juice (as no-one calls them) were the star performers on the former, but, for me, this single was a let-down back then. Listening to it now, though, I can't really say why. I think it may be that this was the point where OJ mutated into Edwyn and backing rather than the tight group that made Blue Boy and Falling and Laughing, with less emphasis on the delirious guitaring and more on E's vocals - not that I think they're bad in any way, as others obviously do, it's just that the distinctive sound of the first few singles was lost, and never regained. 5.5 / 10 b Oh god those horns are vile. Ms Wilson has a nice third-division R&B voice – without a scintilla of soulfulness – but all that farting. It's bad enough when that riff is being hammered out on guitars, but this is intolerable. The record perks up considerably when the tenor gets to solo for a few seconds, and on the outro, but that's all it's got going for it really, and it is a few seconds. Dreadful song, too, of course, which doesn't help. 3 / 10
