I’m not too keen on the Lindsay track but it trumps the earnest Newman pick.... just.

What the almighty fuck is B? it's awful
A - a decent Randy Newman pick (I keep meaning to get that album)

B sounds like typical solo Lindsay, really. Nothing great but certainly inoffensive.
A is a rare song where Newman "rocks out." Done better by the Flamin' Groovies (and Ringo, following their template), but it's pretty impressive for how it manages to be so simultaneously snarky and vulnerable. One of his better songs, even if he's not the one who brought out the best in it.

The first tie where there's not much for me. I find the 'good time' sound of A pretty dull. A middle of the road exercise in tasteful roots music. A stolid affair I'm afraid. I don't find B quite as bad as others. There's a brashness and toughness about the production and performance which means the record succeeds on its own terms. However the song and arrangement are so generic as to seem almost plagiaristic. There's a real sense that they've just recycled the tune and riff from other songs.

I really don't think I like either of these enough, sorry.

I am a Newman fan, and A is a perfect example of his oeuvre, short and to the point, plus featuring a great arrangement. I disagree about it being inferior to other versions, but I know I'm typically alone for this and other Newman tunes.
B is so formulaic that is almost embarrassing.

A sounds like it would go down well in that hotel bar at the side of Llandudno pier. The bloke outside with the CD stall would probably do alright with a few copies of this, too. All a bit ... nothin, innit.
B is fonz, right? It's not too far from the Newman kinda thing, it's in the same ballpark, just a bit of a modern rehash of a 60s rock style. Does more than A though.

B
I heard this once on Andrew Loog Oldham's show on Little Steven's Underground Garage on Sirius and he loved it. I loved it too. I haven't heard it since.
Congrats.
