A is a plinkity plonk 80s disgrace. B takes me into orbit.

B! I have absolutely no idea about it at all, no context. But it's a total groove and a gas!

Back to another strong tie for this one. I think The Fire Engines had a great individualistic sound with their abrasive, but tuneful guitars and aggressive drum sound. Their records always sound as if they're teetering on edge of chaos, but that gives them an exciting tension. The B side of this "Meat Whiplash" is possibly even stronger. B was very nice. A really inventive, spacious arrangement gave the whole thing a really evocative feel. The song itself didn't appear to be especially strong (although it's sometimes difficult to judge these things on first listen) so there's a slight sense of an ordinary gift dressed up in lovely wrapping paper. But hey, I like lovely wrapping paper (as Sneelock might put it!).
Tight, but perhaps good memories of buying and loving the single play a part here...A

B is a great piece that asks for more listenings and further checking (which I won't find the time for, but anyway). A is quite forgettable beside it.

I like the weird high-end off-kilter string plucking here. With the clunky rhythm it's almost like a new-wave update of Palais Schaumburg, you can certainly imagine them dressing and dancing with the same lack of aplomb. The echoing ah-ahhs are a nice touch, I like people pissing about to come up with shambolic individualistic flourishes, and that microphone abuse works for me. I think I actually have something by The Fire Engines, but I don't recall it being that chaotic.
B sounds like a kind of Stereolab-esque retread into a European swinging 60s, via Pink Floyd. I like the brass flourishes and the backing vocals more than the slightly rubbish lead vocal and farty psychedelic warbling. Fair play to whoever picked this for picking something from a less obvious box, but A sounds more playful and chaotic to me, and that's always a winning combination.

Both pretty dull, really. There's maybe half of one song between the two songs. I like the opening guitars of A. Best I can do, I'm afraid...

B sounds like Shane thingy from Happy Mondays. Shit, in other words.
A's pretty drab, but has to win here.

B is a whole load of immersive grooviness. Turns out he was in Spacemen 3, which makes sense. Nice. I knew A of course and have always dug its spindly charms and expected to vote for it. Surprisingly...

Both fairly poor. B is less irritating, marginally.
