Round One, best to worst: Excellent...very good The Temptations - (I Know) I'm Losing You Bobby Hutcherson - Goin' Down South Captain Beefheart - Call On Me Orange Juice - A Poor Old Soul (part two) The Dynamics - Misery The Animated Egg - Sock It My Way The Fire Engines - Candyskin The Marvelettes - Don't mess with Bill Good OutKast - Player's Ball Sam and Dave - I Take What I Want Frankie Laine - Jezebel Sterling Roswell - Crystal Clear Spanky Wilson - Sunshine Of Your Love Okay..mediocre
Elvis Presley - Don't Marvin Gaye – Piece of Clay The 6ths - Falling out of love (with you) Mark Lindsay - Like Nothing You've Ever Seen Phil Collins & Philip Bailey - Easy Lover Poor Randy Newman – Have You Seen My Baby? Spahn Ranch - Lo & Behold
Strong round overall.

it's one thing to rank the songs in order of preference but another to rank them within the context of the cup. personally, i'm on a voyage of discovery, like one of tory boy's mythological characters. i don't need to be reminded how great the temptations and early beefheart are. i want to be turned on to the likes of the animated egg and to give spahn ranch a go. the cup should be an opportunity to be turned on and to turn on.

Yes, I suppose so.
There's a gap between what people want to hear as voters, and what you choose to put forward as your selections. Risk-takers are often punished!

I pretty much follow the same approach that Os outlined in the other post. I vote on what makes the most impact on me at that moment. Within that, I try to reward freshness/originality but it's certainly not my main criteria. I do also try to give greater leeway to stuff I'm hearing for the first time knowing it's much harder for those tracks to make a positive impression compared to stuff you have some familiarity with. With The Temps track I knew it of course, but it had been quite a while since I heard it and It's not as if it's a cup perennial. I thought there was a freshness to the pick that you wouldn't have got with "Papa Was a Rolling Stone" say.

How well would the Spahn Ranch track be doing, if it was by a group called ‘The Ranchettes’ or something? I’m guessing the edgy Manson thing is a turnoff.
Just wait til we get to round 6, with a cracking tune by ‘The Rillingtons’.

Yeah, it is postpunk after all. Wait until people find out what Joy Division were named after.
