Fairport had the magic whilst Sandy Denny was there, it left with her. The first album with Judy Dyble is a wonderful ode to US West Coast sound.
Pentangle is where we should be now with three/four generations into this music era so many journeymen players out there, but we are not. Lightness of touch, fleet, nimble, exploratory, able to be ethereal and earthy at the same time, generate heat, but never overheat, excellent give and take all in service to the song.

And another point- many of these artists were in their late teens or early 20s when their best stuff came out- how the hell did they have the musical maturity to create something so timeless? Just staggering really. Yes, that's something that comes to mind when I listen too. Look at the band in any of those clips - Jansch especially comes across as an old man in some way, there's a kind of 'weight' to his demeanour and his playing that belies his years. In fact before I saw any footage of the band I always thought he was an ancient guest musician on those recordings! It's the cider they used to serve in the folk clubs back then. It had a well known ageing effect. Look at the Wurzels. They were around 15 when they did '..Combine Harvester' but you'd never have guessed.

Fairport had the magic whilst Sandy Denny was there, it left with her. Er yes, absolute bollocks. Full House is fabulous. (I still sing some of the songs to myself I love it that much.) I don't know about best, I only know what I love (and therefore rate). I love Tipplers' Tales, for instance. *Edit - Jacqui Mcshee is the main reason I could never be as fond of Pentangle. Cold vocalist. At least that's my reaction. **Second edit: Maddy Prior can fuck off as far as I'm concerned. Similar 'coldness' to McShee but I the times I saw Steeleye Span, she looked bored shitless. Dialled it in, reluctantly. Contrast that to Fairport who looked like they were having a great time each and every time I saw them. Makes a huge difference.

My own favourite is "...Holidays". When they go full on trad folk later, I kind of lose interest.

My own favourite is "...Holidays". When they go full on trad folk later, I kind of lose interest. I like some of the trad folk stuff very much (I think I'd take Full House over Liege, if anyone's keeping score), but I roughly agree with this. They had two truly unique and remarkable songwriters in Denny and Thompson, and I'm kinda puzzled that they didn't choose to run with that a bit more.

Re: Fairport one album in 1970 doesn't stand against the three from '69, and the unraveling that followed. The magic left with Sandy.

I'll counter that it left with Thompson.
