Was A commercially released at the time? It seems so badly recorded that it's difficult to imagine, the sound almost drops out totally at one point as if recorded on tape that was just about to give up the ghost entirely. The arrangement and production are such a mess that they come close to derailing the whole thing. For all that, I really liked the stoned, droney Byrdsian vocal line and the way it drifted over the proto metal mayhem happening underneath.
B is the kind of reggae I like. It has one of those classic Jamaican lead vocals, in that Gregory Isaacs/Winston Rodney line, that's very easy to listen to. It does, though, feel a little formulaic..not much surprise or ambition going on here.
In a way they're polar opposites..one a bit of a shambolic mess with something interesting going on and the other beautifully recorded and played but without much inspiration.

I agree with everything G says, but my only counter would be that Motown could sound formulaic, but that didn't lessen the joy and way it made you tap your feet. I love this era and style of reggae too - I was never a huge Lovers Rock fan, which lots of reggae singers got into because the records flew off the shelves. This isn't one of those - more conscious reggae while still being a love song.

by quite a distance. It's a favourite off the most interesting AC album, I don't think he did much better (although subsequent LPs had some better individual tracks). The reggae thing was just reggae, I didn't hear much that made it stand out

the cooper track is a real treat, whereas B is reggae by numbers.

I much prefer the next several Alice Cooper albums to the first - it allegedly has no producer, and gosh, it sure sounds like it - meandering and unfocused - but at least it stands out a bit - B is nice enough but pretty nondescript.
A for effort.

If you'd never heard Pretties, you would never guess it was what was to become Alice Cooper. Those harmonies! I like B too, but A is a surprising pick.

As a big fan of the "golden era" Coop band, I was a bit nonplussed when I first heard PFY. I had got this comp. which contains Easy Action as well... and while those 2 albums never really became faves, A is a wonderful track that keeps surprising and delighting me whenever I hear it. B is so lovely and understated though; as I've often said, maybe my very favourite kind of reggae is the stuff that is still tied to its soul roots, like Toots and the Maytals, The Heptones, etc. This is a beautiful little melodic slice of that stuff, and i'm giving it my vote here. Save all my pretties for you, save all my pretties for you, bye bye baby, bye bye. This sounds like The Beatles. I'm not sure if that's worse than I expected from Alice, or better, but either way, it's not something I want to hear.
Yeah, we've probably not had much reggae, which I would normally be thankful for, but given the wretched musty cack I've endured so far, it's a breath of fresh air.

Listening to A I had the same feeling as with the ISB track two rounds before, an early recording of a well known artist with no hint of what was to happen later. Except this is much better than the Parsons track. I'm far from a reggae fan (in fact I ended hating the genre during the 70s cup), but B is one of the kind I can gladly enjoy. And it wins here. Sorry A but

Ah, right, so I really don't like either. A sounds like a real barrel scraper of an era pick, B has no distinguishable features, as generic as you get.

I've loved "Living" for a long time. As others have said, it bears no resemblance to what the band was about to become, but it's such a shambolic blast of joy that I can't resist it.
B is nice, but that's about it.
