i think i picked the mayer track in a very early BCB cup and got slaughtered. unfortunately, it's come against a godhead Brown selection.
A i love you but it has to be B

One of the best things about this cup is how many cool 50s tracks have been put forward. I say 'many' - it might only be three or four - but they're the sort of things I doubt I'd have heard otherwise. A is a great example.
I love some James Brown but B....I dunno, it's just not really doing that much for me. It's not one of my favourites, put it that way.

Tough, tough choice. Love James Brown, but it's just your usual James Brown jam. Not like they're ever bad, but. . .

Mr. Mayer is good, but he is no giant. B is by a giant, during his best period. I don't care if it's standard for the time and place, it was quite a time and place.

Vote B
And my votes this round were not blanket voting without listening...listened throughout the day to these "Selections" and got around to voting for them tonight...

I quite liked A. It has charm. B is a cornerstone though.

Both quite good rather than great. There are many more exciting Brown deep cuts so I'm finding this a bit of a puzzler. A though is fairly standard doo-wop, albeit with a very strong vocal. The nervous energy of Brown is always going to excite me more though in a tie like this.

Yeah, A's got a strong vocal, but it seems a bit devoid of much of a hook or anything. Seems like it would already have sounded fairly dated by the time it was released, too.
I'm probably as ignorant of James Brown's recordings as anyone on this site, I don't mind some of this, I just don't know when I'd feel like listening to it. But the drumming is cool, everything is tight, and Jimmy's exclamations are a proper jittery fit.

I'll go B here, but is it greedy of me to wish JB had fashioned more actual songs around his epic grooves?

a Oh my, a bit of mid-tempo Sixties R&B that isn't pretending to be something else. I don't remember this at the time – I'm guessing it didn't get much of a release in the UK – but I took to it immediately, with its vaguely ’50s feel, nice backing vocals, absurd bassman burbling outro, great guitar solo, brevity and recorded-in-a-grain-silo production. I played it twice That's the ticket 6.5 / 10 b ah, the Goonfather of Fu*k makes his traditional appearance. Ugly, soul-less metronomy, with grunting. Lasted one minute. It was enough. 1.5 / 10
