I actually really did think he was already dead. I seem to remember making a post about how much I liked him somewhere. would I dream such a thing?
In my dream I remember describing watching "Sweet Bird of Youth". he seemed like a new kind of bad guy to me. He was actually pretty handsome with a winning smile. he played a total son of a bitch but whenever I watch the movie he is one of the things that I like best about it.
By the time he was ruling the world as a skilled and reliable actor with serious comedy chops I had already grown to love his performance in "Payday" - another lousy son of a bitch that's just fascinating to watch. Also, I watched "the man who fell to earth" a bunch of times. Rip's role isn't exactly big in TMWFTE but it's important. he fucks up but he's sorry. it's easy to forgive him because Newton does but it's that same quality. he's not a model guy but he's relatable.
It was great seeing him become a name and he deserved it. He had that same quality on Larry Sanders. Artie is not exactly a nice guy but he's a solid & damned interesting guy.
I thought he was gone already but it's nice to take stock when you appreciate somebody. I like entertainment and he sort of staked out a special place even before you factor in all the stories about how crazy he could be.
one more thing -- I'm a Terry Southern Fan. LOTS of people were in a position to throw Terry Southern a bone and passed on it. Rip Torn had Terry Southern's back. He may have been good at playing heels but he quietly did FAR more for TS than people who didn't but tooted their horns like they did. R.I.P. to a talented one of a kind fellow.

An amazingly long and varied career. An early highlight for me was his turn as the nasty Maax in the B-grade cult classic The Beastmaster, and more recently I have loved seeing him do his stuff in Men In Black, 30 Rock and Larry Sanders Show.
R.I.P Rip.
