Here are a couple lists of top soul albums for 2019 www.albumoftheyear.org/genre/19-soul/2019/pitchfork/www.albumoftheyear.org/genre/19-soul/2019/We talk about '60s soul and funk various amounts on here, but I noticed no one on here or on Facebook really listens to any unless it's more retro like Durand Jones. I think current soul music is in a weird place. Experimental like Lizzo and Solange or retro like Durand Jones, Leon Bridges, or Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats. Most retro-soul seems very generic and watered down in comparison to the classic artists from Stax, Muscle Shoals, etc. I do recommend the Ari Lennox album, however. She takes classic soul to newer places. Kinda like Syleena Johnson (Syl's daughter), but different.

It's shit
I tried with Solange and it just sounded heroically average to me.

I like some of it, but i agree that a lot of it just doesn't have that special something missing from the best classic soul. Sometimes it's the lack of a great song, sometimes it's the feel of it just being rote, and sometimes it's that modern airless production that makes it sound bleugh. Daptone among a few similar labels often got it right though; they've released some lovely soul records. I'll post some clips tomorrow.

Truth and Soul Records wqs great as well. Lee Fields and Lady made some of my favourite soul records over the past 2 decades.
