The first three or so RHCP albums, when they were trying to be a funkier version of Fishbone, were ok..(Not great, but ok)....That Cliff Richard track, and every other Richard track I've heard, is horrible AM radio pap..

I like We Don't Talk Anymore, but early Red Hot Chili Peppers had some okay songs. Different animals too. Early RHCP were funk workouts, not really songs. Only later, when they started having pretensions, did they start writing songs. I'm sure Richard had some professional songwriters working for him.

He did. Apparently there was a golden period, with songs like 'Green Light'. Late 70s. Alan somebody.

He's like their Barry Manilow or something, right? Um ... Cliff started out as one of the many young rockers in the Elvis style promoted in the UK in an attempt to cash in and use And some of these had forays into musical film. One famous song of his was 'The Young Ones' from the film Summer Holiday. For a while in the early days, his backing band were The Shadows - you should have heard of them. Anyway, his rocker image however turned into that of a Christian, "nice young man" (no euphemism at that stage), still singing especially in the rain, at Wimbledon, but only very acceptable lyrics (apparently he had second thoughts of singing the song 'Devil Woman'). He was an established He was thought, up until recently, to have had a picture of himself in his loft which showed increasing signs of ageing but things* have caught up with him. Nevertheless he retains a strong following of elderly ladyfans. * Things like accusations of paedophilia with boys.

But he didn't start out as MD to a diva in gay bathhouses, and he was a proper rock & roller in his time, which was a few months in the late 1950s. He basically followed Elvis's career trajectory, only without the drugs, crew and sandwiches. If an 84-year-old Elvis was still shuffling on this mortal coil, I suspect his fan-base might be largely skewed towards the female and decrepit.

I met a guy who worked in UK customs for a while and he is adamant that they received a package addressed to Cliff Richard that was intercepted because it was scat films.

Elvis's career trajectory, only without the drugs, crew and sandwiches. That's bleak, man.

I love the Red Hot Chili Peppers! And their ruffian entitlement chic. I know Kiedis is a weedy-voiced tit but all that was more than redeemed by the rest of the band, especially John Frusciante, who is one of my guitar heroes. They’re pointless now though and have said everything they were ever going to say. Which can also be said about Cliff of course. Together with “no smoke without fire”.
