I introduced my boy to Tati at Christmas. I have strong memories of watching Les Vacances du M Hulot on Christmas mornings on BBC2 and wanted to continue the tradition. Because he's of this generation, I expected him to go "meh" - understandable because it's slow and foreign. BUT - he loved it! He was howling with laughter at both Mon Oncle and Hulot - and rightly so, because Tati WAS a genius. Timeless stuff that never loses its charm, innocence and humour.

I've only seen Playtime - and that was an absolute joy. You need to see that one, at least, on the big screen. Every frame this huge canvas with umpteen things going on. Incredible.

Yeah I've seen all of them on the big screen. They're actually showing Mon Oncle at my local village cinema tomorrow, but it's his granny's birthday.

PlayTime might be my favorite movie full stop... but I love all of them. (John, you really need to see the earlier ones!) When Criterion put out their Tati box set I was one happy bunny.
BTW, it was my dad - not an aficionado of French cinema (I'm not sure he's ever even seen a non-Tati foreign language film, from any country!) - who turned me on to him, when I was a teenager.

Wow! I read a good book on Tati, and surprisingly I don't think this project was even mentioned in it!

I think it's mentioned in the book that accompanies the box set, Charlie!

I need to rewatch the ones I've seen and watch those I haven't. Mon Oncle is a pure delight.
This scene alone is some kind of comedic genius....he was one of those people who saw the world differently.

I had no idea until today that the entirety of Playtime was shot on a massive set constructed by Tati just for that film. Wild stuff.

Yeah, bankrupted him. Amazing film.
Anyone seen Trafic, the follow-up?

Yeah, bankrupted him. Amazing film. Anyone seen Trafic, the follow-up? It's very much worth seeing, but you can tell that the budget was a lot smaller than he'd been accustomed to! Not as strong overall as the previous ones, but there are some amazing bits, as you would expect.
