I just finished teaching Romeo and Juliet for a second time to Year 11 boys and they really liked it. By the time we got to Act 4 they were able to make lots of their own interpretations about Romeo in particular. It was a real pleasure to teach them, and just to annoy John, I'm happy to say that we read it closely without seeing any production or film of it.
The dichotomy of fate versus free will and physical love versus transcendental love was very enjoyable. They particularly enjoyed all the sexual imagery (as 15 year old boys will).

The idea that you "know" more than other (more educated) people though is what can be arrogant. The fact is that much of education, particularly in the humanities, is an attempt to provide children with much-needed cultural capital. Shakespeare is hugely important for that, especially for the less privileged. Otherwise education becomes solely about "utility" and "what is useful". Eliot said "reality cannot be deprived of the other echoes that inhabit the garden." Shakespeare is completely pointless for most pupils, especially weaker ones. And I have no idea what the point of that Eliot quote is, other than showing off.

It's probably the easiest Shakespeare to get, though. But good you (and they) found it enjoyable and rewarding.

I thought Dire Straits encapsulated it best.
