use this powerful library called the internet don't take this personally, gav, but i think you are over-reliant on it. most of the things you post, seem to be cut and pasted from an article you've found on the web.

I find with internet forums it is best to be accurate to what the disagreeing knucklehead will also find, so knowing something isn't enough, it's knowing the same thing as the one who disagrees with you usually quells it. I don't really cut and paste, unless I want to inform from a very credible source, usually politics, or science, and also possibly encourage discussion most of which fail here. 'LuDin's finest moment was the Trump presidency.

The way the internet has developed is interesting because if you wanted to educate yourself to Masters level in any subject, you could in fact do it. The days of saying the net is unreliable or time-wasting are long gone.
But I guess people will always need a physical presence, someone to talk to, to push for thought.

Indeed, options are there for endless distraction and education. I do feel were are much more distracted now than ever, with also the possibility of being much more knowledgeable. Though conspiracy nuts are examples of both distraction and useless "knowledge".

I don't think that first statement is true actually, alot of what's on the net is fairly superficial, which isn't to deny it's an incredible resource.

Much of what I know is self-educated, but studying for a degree sharpened the application of that knowledge into something more tangible.

Yes, you'd need to work hard just to find reliable information. But there's a wealth of academic material there, you wouldn't need to turn to a book or a classmate. Discipline and selection.
