What do you, Preludin? Are you a fan of the 2nd single from the Brit indie-poppers' Reading, Writing and Arithmetic album of 1990?
It was a chart hit in the US, Australia, and many other countries. While the demise of Rough Trade at the time meant the song didn't get a contemporaneous single release at that time, it has gone on to become a much-loved and played classic since then.
So, did it deserve to be a HIT! Or is it SHIT!

I much prefer Can't Be Sure of their hits. This one is slightly bland, but not unpleasant. Decent radio pop, a hit I guess.

I voted hit. I've always liked it. Of all the fey indie records of that period something like this stands out.
Listening to it now the song that pops into my head btw is Please, Please, Please.... by The Smiths, mostly for that guitar sound I guess but it sounds like a musical template for this kinda thing.

Yes I like this one. Memorable vocal hooks and a good lyric are what make it stand out. The guitars are just standard indie fare I guess....MarrEsque I guess.....but I guess that's how they need to be. One of the better things about this kind of music is it stands in opposition to the ego driven guitar soloing of raw music.....but that means there needs to be intrigue elsewhere.... I am rambling ain't I??

It's difficult to say much about it, it definitely has a hint of Smiths, and it feels almost like a complete void of a song until the chorus. And that titular hook line kind of corkscrews into my brain, just repeats round and round, until I want to smash my head against an oncoming train.

I love it. The whole first album is great. The second is patchy - as good an example of sophomore slump as there is.

Pleasant enough, nice semi-acoustic texture, some semblance of melody as these things go, just...doesn't grab me really. Might be the old '80s textures' thing. Not bad certainly, but pretty much resides in Mehville.
