Well? If you were to list your top ten best english players (regardless of position) would all/most come from up north?
*I have no fucking idea of the cut off between t'north and the rest of the country in terms of location.

TBH, I don't really care about any team other than Tottenham. My all-time tottenham ten wouldn't include many Englishmen, either - Argentines, Scots, two Irishmen, a German, a French guy, but as far as I can remember, no-on from north of the Mersey or Trent stands out in memory since Bobby Smith: Greaves, Hoddle, Kane, King, Chivers, Mabbutt, Perryman, all soft southerners.

No is the short answer. There are probably more footballing producing areas in the North because of all the major industrial cities, whereas in the south you've mainly just got London and its outer suburbs. But you could argue the East End/Essex area has produced more major footballers than any other.

I thought about the ten best English players of the last 35 years or so, roughly in line with what I can remember and I came up with....
Northern Paul Scholes Alan Shearer Steven Gerrard Paul Gascoigne Chris Waddle
Southern Ashley Cole John Barnes Tony Adams Matt Le Tissier

No Ralph Coates, Chris Waddle, Gazza? I think I remember reading a few years ago that County Durham was still the county with the highest number of PL players per population, and there's no major urban city there. Historically you had Howard Kendall, Bob Paisley, Bryan Robson, Bobby Robson, Colin Todd, Colin Bell, Coates, Pop Robson etc all from small towns and isolated villages in some cases.

Sure I have individual memories of incidents with Waddle and Gascoigne, but neither of them in my all-time team - they just weren't really engaged with Tottenham. And I never rated Coates at all

Ralph Coates is an important member of my list of "70s footballers who looked excessively old".
