I don't think either will happen. NATO don't want any escalation and Putin certainly won't be changing his mind. I am sure nobody wants it. But escalation is easily reached once a nuclear plant is bombed. Or energy prices go through the roof even more. Not to mention food deficits. Things can change very quickly when the circumstances become very different. But what could NATO do about it, they're not going to invade Russia. Unless Russia attack another NATO country, I can't see how this would happen, much less be "inevitable".

It is my opinion that fear of the apocalypse and Armageddon is a simple turning outwards of our own fear of death/lust for survival, in the same way that belief in a creator god is simply a mislocation of the way each individual creates their own world by learning.
And if life is so precious (which it is), why spend any of it grubbing about in a cesspit of worry about how it will end? Sure there may be a nuclear war, or giant asteroid impact, but there's nothing at all one can do about them, any more than a lightning strike or whatever.
Doomsday thinking has been around for my whole life. It hasn't happened yet, and I suspect it never will, but either way I'm not going to spend another second of my life even considering it. If I had my way, I'd lock this thread.

It's probably related to our Christian roots too. It's part of our culture to speculate on the end of the world.

Our dependence on Russia has enabled Putin. We need to be self-sufficient. Man, GB I figured you'd be salivating at getting the old Death's Head Legion together and marching off to glory. You suggesting I'm some kind of Nazi?! You're right though, I would like to saddle up and fight the Ruskies. In fact, throw the Chinese in for good matter and we can bring the motherfuckin' ruckas and end this shit once and for all. Imagine the armies of Europe marching into the final battle with this playing in the background.... Ooooft! We'd be knee deep in Ruskie and commie blood within hours.

I know you're joking but I think China might have a good crack at military supremacy real goddam soon. I think the real squabble over Taiwan is that that's where like 90% the semi-counducter business is. You can't have state of the art military without semi-conductors. China clearly knows this.

Pathetic that we outsourced our semiconductor manufacturing capability, though Intel and AMD are breaking ground on manufacturing facilities here. Which why kids you can't let wanker MBA accountants make all your business decisions for you, you get caught with inability to be self sufficient and an empty supply chain. Any war with China would probably accelerate quickly to a nuclear war with their willingness to do unrelenting waves of humanity charges on firebases/installations. Something which Korean War Vets I know still get quiet and a faraway stare about 70 years on.

One thing I find weird about the war in the Ukraine is the "common decency" that was shown a few times during the war. Like, "here vald, stop bombing for a few hours so we can evacuate people", don't get me wrong I'm fucking glad he did it the few times, but in any war it's more or less to the death, fuck one side up until the other gives up. I can't imagine this happened during WW2. Even the sentence sounds emphatic, "We're going to WAR......but we're not gonna be total cunts to each other like".
Anyway I'm glad this happens nowadays in some wars, just sounds weird to me. Like you're fighting some juck to the death but no kicks to the balls.

You only really had aerial bombing in WW2 - admittedly vey bad if you were in one of the cities being hit continually, but you didn't have an occupying force raizing towns and cities to the ground with ground missiles as you've seen in Ukraine.
