This could also go in the 'Miniscule Moments That Move You' thread, specifically the bit in the chorus on the 4th time of repeating the title, where it changes from F# to G#m (muso wanker alert!) and her voice rises on the word 'knew', which is just magical and gets me every time..

More than any other Who single this fits the bill for me: Between this 'Miles', and 'I Can't Explain', I felt spoilt for choice.

The intro, even the way she keeps stacking up the different motifs and adlibs in the fade...it's undeniable.

Oh God, yeah, the fade...it's one of those where you want to run after it, shouting 'come back!!'

Imagine writing something like this:
I suppose playing it 8673 times for 'mad' crowds for close to three decades must take the shine off a bit, but still...you pretty much define an era 'just' by putting some chords and a few words together. You'd feel pretty pleased with yourself, I guess.

Yeah, I've overlooked it for so long BECAUSE of its ubiquity and pathological effectiveness, but...even that feels like a testimony to the sheer inevitability of the thing. It seems like one of those songs that writes itself, the sort of thing where the writer could almost accidentally chuck it out cause it sounds too "obvious", perhaps failing to see that this is the mark of greatness.

You'd feel pretty pleased with yourself, I guess. I saw this lot at the Hacienda just before their first album came out and they were extraordinary. The energy was palpable and there was an air of 'right time, right place' Proper power trio, with a Moon/Mitchell style drummer, driving everything, but such great songs. This may have become unfortunately ubiquitous, but taken out of context, it stands up well.
