I know this will interest Ray, at any rate. Just seen these enhanced colour photos of Laurel & Hardy on twitter, and it kinda freaked me out the difference between the familiar fuzzy b&w, and these ultra-sharp images. Makes them more real as actual people, somehow.
Anyway, talk about them too, if you like. Eight thousand words or less per post, Ray.
Second post on this thread, btw:

Just a few days ago something popped up on some social media and it was about their appearance on This Is Your Life, and how they really didn't enjoy it, because they were surprised (of course) and hadn't had time to prepare. Usually their public appearances were planned, choreographed, and all they could do here was sit under spotlights and squirm while questions were asked of them. I can understand their discomfort
(around 5:15 you get an idea)

Those colour photos... No reason to believe they weren't colour originals, but Stan had red hair and always wore clown white make-up on film, although Block-Heads was a late film and maybe he hadn't bothered.

flesh colored doesn't seem right but I can get used to anything. I grew up with some of their two-reelers on TV. they were shown less than Little Rascals or 3 stooges but made a stronger impression. something about their personalities gives their stuff a lot of heart. back in the VHS days I was duping "way out west" when the kid walked in and took to it right away. the stuff she liked best as a kid is the stuff she still likes now - the dancing, the tickling scene, the "lighter". I love the 3 stooges but they are basically morons. L&H are basically children even when they are married or gainfully employed. I think their enduring appeal may be rooted in the fact that most people have a certain amount of good will for children.

L & H is probably my introduction to the "henpecked" comedy chestnut. one or both of them, when married are married to horrible, overbearing women.

Mentioning the 3 Stooges in the same breath as Laurel and Hardy seems like sacrilege. Another US/UK divide?

I don't think ANYBODY would put the Three Stooges in the same bracket as L&H.
Abbott and Costello are maybe their closest comedy relations but they still fall a long way behind.

of course they do. I really do rate the 3 Stooges and i really enjoy watching them. Since I grew up watching both in the same time frame it's an easy comparison to make. If you are even handed I think you would notice some similarities. the reason I made the comparison was to point out what I think is special about L & H - they are endearing for a child like quality. While I'm a fan of the Stooges I would never try to fob them off as endearing.
I'm the "whoever likes the most stuff wins" guy and I feel that way for a reason. People who liked Warners Cartoons would denigrate other cartoons. People who like the Marx Brothers would look down their nose at lesser comedy teams. you don't need to love the Beatles OR the Stones. you can love them both or you can hate them both.
I watch 3 Stooges and I enjoy them. This takes nothing away from L&H, Marx Brothers or Jim Fucking Carrey. I like watching shit that makes me laugh and I ain't about to apologize if others don't think it's funny.
L&H are funny but so much more. I love that about them. I can still enjoy watching three grown men sitting down to three roast turkeys. it may not be in the same league but I happen to think it's still pretty great.
