Seeing as I still don't have a TV set up in the new house, I've been forced to use the laptop, and have just started the first series of Better Things, largely on recommendations from a page or so ago. I'm enjoying it, thanks.

I'm a couple episodes away from finishing the first season of "Russian Doll". It's a "groundhog day" type thing but they added another major character like 4 episodes in and it's sort of jarring. the viewer has been only seeing one characters "groundhog day" and now we are suddenly seeing another.
I like it. it's really "artsy" & self conscious but in a good way. it's character driven and the dialogue is very good. This Natasha Lyonne gal really lays it on thick but it suits the character. I'll give season two a go. I hear they are going to finish things up with a third season. on the face of it, that sounds like it could get redundant but it's really been clever & full of surprises so far. you never know.

Last night, I started watching the new Netflix documentary, American Factory, about a Chinese auto glass company who sets up a plant in an old GM factory in Dayton, OH. The culture clash is interesting as is the Chinese management's impatience with regulations and American workers.

Watched Dave Chappelle's Netflix special, Sticks and Stones, last night. I really liked it, but then I'm a fan.

A 7-part series based on a true story about a prison employee who has sexual relationships with 2 inmates and helps them escape. It's well-cast and neatly shot (produced and directed by Ben Stiller, who was apparently inspired by True Detective); gets an 8.0 on IMDb. I'm enjoying it, but it seems a bit dragged out in places. Still, the cast and story are compelling enuf to hold my interest. Plus it doesn't hurt that Benicio del Toro is fricking hot.

I'm half way through Fosse/Verdon. It's wonderful and really makes me want to watch those musicals again. Michelle Williams is just great and will surely win awards for her performance. mentalist wins. Her emmy acceptance speech was much discussed. I've watched the first two. I had planned on "on demand" viewing but it disappeared almost right after it aired. it's on HULU now and well worth enduring the commercials.
It's pretty artsy! I like the way it's jumping around in time and incorporating memories within the straight narrative - very clever. Most clever of all is how they solved a rather glaring problem. How do you deal with a guy like Fosse in the #metoo era? There's no denying his talent and his influence on his chosen fields. there's also no denying that he was a terrible prick and would never get away with treating women the way he did if he were coming up now. How to solve this problem? tell the untold story of Gwen Verdon alongside his own. the actress is uncanny. Gwen understands Bob better than he understands himself so her ability to "translate Bob" is a terrific device. Bob tells the other dancers to watch what Gwen is doing with her hands. "it's like scooping ice cream!" she says. she has another scene with the producer when she patiently explains that Bob isn't making a musical for escapism and that maybe the time for musicals as escapism has passed. Bob, of course can't be bothered to explain himself. he's doing the work.
I'm a big fan of Fosse's movies as a director so It'll be interesting to see them next time around. it seems like GV added to what Bob was doing the way Polly Platt was obviously doing something to Peter Bogdonovich's work simply because once she was gone there was something missing in the sensibility and tone of the work.
short version: great show. looking forward to finishing it up.

Fascinating BBC documentary on Art Dealer fraudster Michel Cohen who embezzled millions of dollars from various clients. I was intrigued by how unrepentant he appeared to be.
