I thought the Dracula was a bit tedious and a wasted opportunity. A bit contrived in its diversity too. If each episode was just one hour, with less of the ‘clever’ dialogue, it would have been more successful. I confess I didn't watch it, but I don't rate Mark Gatiss or Steven Moffat as writers. You know what you're going to get will be overblown and gimmicky, I don't think either know how to tell a straightforward story.

I totally agree about Gatiss. I think that he knows how to design a script and engineer for effect - which is enough for plenty. But it's cheap. Hollow. Don't know enough Moffat to comment.

Moffat was arguably the finest-ever writer on Doctor Who, certainly the best showrunner since the return. He was also responsible for Coupling, which could be quite brilliantly funny at times, He is clever, and he knows it, but he does pull off some amazing coups. I thought Sherlock was pretty nifty, too, although it did jump the shark a bit towards the end. Not particularly fond of Gatiss.

I preferred the 70s Dr Who. The modern one was too glib for me and too knowing.

I preferred the 70s Dr Who. The modern one was too glib for me and too knowing. I know. Pretty sure we had this conversation before. Tom Baker still ranks as the best doctor, sure, but davies and Moffat beween them transformed the whole thing with those intricate story arcs and simple grown-upness. They did a spectacular job. And some of the individual episodes were standout TV. I liked the knowingness, very reminiscent of Buffy, which was great TV. As grown-up fanboys, Davies and Moffatt wanted to ravel the backstories more, to take in all the things that had been going on in the comics, etc, while the programme was off air, and tie everything spectacularly together. As, with a brief interruption for being a student, I've watched Dr Who since it debuted in 1963, I was prepared to go along with them. So far, Chibnall seems to be deliberately resetting the whole thing for a much younger audience and I'm gradually disengaging from it.

I'm yet to sit through a whole episode but I like the Lady Doctor very much.

I'm currently halfway through The Mandalorian. It's fun - definitely a throwback to old Westerns, and definitely better than most of the recent Star Wars movies.

I'm currently watching season 3 of The Crown. I'm liking it a lot and curious to see how the Brits on this board rate it. Episode 2 (the one with Princess Margaret meeting president Johnson) was great!

To some extent you're right, I suppose. But there are some episodes like the one about the Aberfan disaster, or the one about a BBC documentary that are far from kind to them. I'm curious to see how they will tell the Charles-Diana relationship (next season, I believe)
