He was never my favourite football commentator; I much preferred the sonorous and more clipped sound of Barry Davies, who had a natural authority, particularly on the big occasions. However, in his slightly nasal tone there was the epitome of an amateurish enthusiasm that made him seem much more human. RIP - he was a legend.

RIP. I did a double check when he mentioned the 2008 FA Cup final between Portsmouth and Cardiff. I have absolutely no memory of that game at all, but sure enough it did happen.

An iconic voice. Makes me sad hearing about "cup final day" and watching some of those old clips. I can remember Spurs v Coventry and I actually had a Spurs shirt which my Mum bought in London around 1987 (one of those knock off shirts you found in markets).
RIP

I did have a vague memory of Portsmouth getting to the final, but had forgotten they actually won it. Don't remember Cardiff getting there at all.

..and he gets it a bit wrong, as he often does ( because Ronay is more interested in composing a witty sentence than being insightful - which isn't to say I don't often enjoy reading him). ""Frankly, we have a much better, more diverse, more fluent and nuanced TV product in its place." TV coverage has improved in all sorts of ways, but commentary isn't one of them. No one in their right mind would think Sam Matterface was better than Davies or Motson.

They all sound the same with the exception of Martyn Tiler and Tyldesley.

Most agree with you - the outpouring of hatred for Shaddapayaface is heart-warming. Please note, in Barney's defence, that he didn't say commentary is better now, just the product/presentation as a whole.
I was a bit astonished, at how many preferred Davies's schoolmasterly admonitions to JM's enthusiasms.
And for me, Barney writes like a dream, but I go to him for entertainment, not insight.

He can be very good indeed, especially when he goes on one of his fanciful descriptions.

Heard a wonderfully sleazy anecdote about Motson from a friend recently. I imagine him being an avuncular man not capable of such thing.
He went up to a female colleague of his and said "I've just taken one of those blue pills - you know those ones - so, if you're up for it, be here in twenty minutes"
