I've been meaning to start a thread on this for a while... You've been able to watch bits of the old US TV show The Midnight Special on YouTube for quite a while, but over the last few months they've started curating their own channel and posting individual tracks - many live, some really excellent. Here are my picks: they really FLY through this, don't they? clearly live, from a time when the Dan were a proper fun band before they got all jazz-lite and bored the pants off anyone interested in enjoying themselves SO much to love here! dig those intros! Tina's wig! Ike's guitar tone! and the sheer confidence that woman had. This is irresistible Didn't we vote this our favourite Bee Gees track some time ago? It really is a beautiful song. Barry appears to be straining for the high notes but when the harmonies come in you know how shplendid those bros were when they got together. Clem Burke as usual giving it more than he needs to, Debbie looking slightly pissed off (notice how the crowd go nuts when she steps forward to the front of the stage!), the band almost out of their depth (but not quite) doing disco-ified rock - I dunno, this is kind of amateurish in a way, but I really like it.

Oh, God there's full episodes - which, if you have any affinity for the sort of sheer variety of the era, make for great watching.

I posted that originally but removed it because I could hear you saying 'stodgy 70s rock'! Honestly!

I’m making my way through the episodes. Definitely takes some bloom off the early 70s rose - it’s incredibly uneven so far. Though the best of it all is amazing.
I can’t help myself from starting off with the worst though. Sadly, there’s no individual clip, but fast-forward this to about 35 minutes in and behold Harry Chapin, quite possibly delivering the worst performance of the worst song ever:

I know the record well, but have never known much about TT himself or watched him perform it. He does a great job!

That Timmy Thomas performance is insanely fantastic!

Thomas is kind of playing in the genius/idiot realm there. Hands flailing. All that insane drum stuff on the keyboard. I love it. But it’s at least some percentage ridiculous.
Then Chapin comes on and renders all else ‘a masterpiece’ by comparison.

... behold Harry Chapin, quite possibly delivering the worst performance of the worst song ever Now, let's be fair. Firstly, it's actually a pretty impressive performance of a terrible song. And secondly, while I have no intention of revisiting his catalog just to prove a point, I'm pretty sure Harry was guilty of worse. (He makes a likable host, though.) My big question is: is a beard still considered "facial hair" if it isn't actually on the face? I've watched a few of these episodes lately myself. I kinda love how insanely varied they are. It's a bit like The Ed Sullivan Show.

I started a BCB thread on this performance once. I still dig it.

Yeah, really singular style, sound, ideas, approach.
That bridge is such a satisfying payoff, and you instinctively wish they did it more, but...the fact that you only get it twice is kind of crucial to its impact.

It's so good it gets its own introduction! Have you heard any Senor Soul, J? That was the group many of the WAR guys were in before the Burdon period. Here's one of their gems...
